Chapter 2 - The Story They Chose.

The emergency department was too bright for secrets.

Claire sat beneath cold white lights while a nurse checked her blood pressure and listened to the baby's heartbeat.

The steady rhythm should have calmed her.

Instead, it made her think about Daniel's hands around her wrists.

"Everything sounds reassuring right now," the nurse said gently.

Claire nodded.

She thanked her because she did not trust herself to say anything else.

Her phone buzzed on the bed beside her.

Sophie had sent three files.

The first was the twelve-second video Claire already knew existed.

The second was almost four minutes long.

The third was a photograph of a document Claire had never seen before.

Before Claire could open it, Daniel appeared at the curtain.

"Can I come in?"

Claire stared at him.

"No."

He remained there anyway.

"Claire, please."

"I said no."

A nurse stepped toward him.

Daniel raised both hands.

"I'm her husband."

Claire looked at the nurse.

"I don't want him in here."

The nurse did not hesitate.

"Then he needs to leave."

Daniel's face tightened.

"This is insane."

Claire almost smiled at the familiarity of it.

Martin had used the same kind of word whenever someone refused him.

Ridiculous.

Dramatic.

Unreasonable.

Insane.

The Mercer family had a vocabulary for any woman who did not cooperate.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"My father is already talking to an attorney."

"Good."

"You don't understand what you're starting."

Claire finally looked directly at him.

"No, Daniel."

"I understand what you started."

He flinched.

Then he left.

Claire opened Sophie's second video.

It began before Daniel grabbed her.

Sophie had apparently been filming a short clip of the holiday table for social media.

The camera pointed down at a plate for several seconds, but the audio was clear.

Martin's voice came first.

"She signs tonight."

Daniel answered quietly.

"She's already suspicious."

"Then stop acting nervous."

Claire stopped the video.

Her heart began pounding.

She played it again.

Martin spoke about a proxy.

Daniel asked what would happen if Claire refused.

Martin replied with five words.

"Then we make her understand."

Claire stared at the screen until the letters of the video timer blurred.

She had spent six years believing Daniel was the softest person in his family.

Martin was the storm.

Daniel was the shelter.

That was the story she had told herself.

Now she wondered whether the shelter had simply been another room inside the same house.

Her phone rang.

The caller was Rachel Kim, Claire's attorney and college roommate.

Claire answered immediately.

"Sophie sent me something," Rachel said.

Claire leaned back against the hospital pillow.

"She said she sent it to someone he couldn't order around."

"That would be me."

Despite everything, Claire let out one breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

Rachel's tone became serious.

"I need you to listen carefully."

"Okay."

"Do not sign anything."

"I wasn't planning to."

"Not at the hospital."

"Not tomorrow."

"Not if Daniel cries, apologizes, threatens you, or tells you the company will collapse."

Claire sat straighter.

"Why would the company collapse?"

Rachel paused.

"Because I looked at the document Sophie photographed."

Claire opened the third file.

The photograph showed the top page of a legal agreement.

Her name appeared in bold.

So did Daniel's.

The title read TEMPORARY VOTING PROXY AND MANAGEMENT AUTHORIZATION.

Claire's stomach tightened.

She owned twenty-six percent of Mercer Development through shares she had received when her mother's commercial property firm merged with Martin's company nine years earlier.

She had always been told her stake was protected.

Rachel continued.

"That document doesn't just cover maternity leave."

"What does it do?"

"It gives Daniel voting control over your shares."

Claire looked closer.

"Temporary?"

"That's how the first page is labeled."

"And the rest?"

"Sophie only photographed page one."

Claire closed her eyes.

The missing blue folder had contained her notes from an internal audit she had been conducting quietly for three weeks.

She had discovered unexplained payments to contractors connected to Martin's longtime business partner.

Daniel knew she was reviewing them.

He had called her paranoid.

Then tired.

Then obsessed.

Tonight, her folder had moved from the kitchen island to beside Martin's chair.

"Rachel, they took my audit notes."

Rachel went silent.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Then this is bigger than the dinner."

Claire looked toward the curtain where Daniel had been standing.

"I know."

A police officer entered a few minutes later to take her statement.

He explained that Martin claimed the cigarette contact had been accidental during an argument.

Daniel had reportedly supported that version.

Elaine had said she was too upset to remember clearly.

Claire felt her anger settle into something colder.

"And Sophie?"

The officer checked his notes.

"She gave us the video."

Claire exhaled.

"Good."

The officer hesitated.

"There is one problem."

"What?"

"Your sister-in-law left before we finished speaking with everyone."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"Left where?"

"We don't know."

Claire immediately called Sophie.

No answer.

She called again.

Straight to voicemail.

Then a text appeared from Sophie's number.

I'M FINE.

DON'T TRUST ANYONE WHO SAYS I CHANGED MY STORY.

Claire stared at the message.
