Chapter 15 - Sophie Comes Back.

Sophie returned at 3:30 in the morning wearing jeans, an oversized coat, and the expression of someone who had spent an entire day deciding which member of her family was least dangerous.
Rachel met her in the hotel lobby and brought her upstairs.
Claire stood when the door opened.
Sophie stopped several feet away.
For a second, neither woman knew what to do.
Then Sophie began crying.
"I'm sorry."
Claire crossed the room and hugged her.
The hug did not erase anything.
It simply acknowledged that Sophie had been the one person at the table who tried to make sure the truth survived.
When they sat down, Sophie placed three phones, a laptop, and a small external drive on the table.
Rachel stared at the collection.
"How many backup plans do you have?"
Sophie wiped her face.
"I grew up with Martin Mercer."
Claire understood.
Sophie explained what happened before dinner.
Elaine had approached her two days earlier and said Martin planned to pressure Claire into signing the proxy.
Elaine wanted the dining-room camera active so there would be proof of Martin's threats.
Sophie did not trust the home system because Martin controlled the server.
So she also decided to record on her phone.
"I thought if there were two copies, he couldn't erase both."
Claire nodded.
"Smart."
Sophie looked miserable.
"Not smart enough."
She admitted she had known Elaine wanted Daniel to keep Claire at the table long enough for Martin to explain the Harcourt deal.
She had objected.
Elaine insisted Daniel would only block the doorway or ask Claire to stay.
"Nobody said he would grab you," Sophie said.
Claire believed her.
"What happened when Martin moved toward me?"
Sophie looked down.
"Mom froze."
"And you?"
"I kept recording."
She began crying again.
"I hate myself for that."
Claire's voice softened, but only slightly.
"You also called for help."
Sophie shook her head.
"That's the problem."
She opened her phone records.
At 7:48 p.m., seconds before Daniel restrained Claire, Elaine leaned toward Sophie and whispered that she had already called emergency services from the kitchen.
Sophie believed her.
That was why she said someone was already on the way.
But Elaine's call log showed no emergency call.
"Then who called?" Claire asked.
Sophie turned the laptop around.
"A neighbor on seventeen heard you scream and called."
Claire stared at the screen.
If the neighbor had not heard, help would not have been coming at all.
Elaine had lied to Sophie while the confrontation was still happening.
Rachel looked troubled.
"Why tell Sophie help was coming if she hadn't called?"
Claire knew the answer.
"To keep Sophie filming instead of leaving the room to call."
Sophie went pale.
The possibility hung between them.
Elaine may have wanted the scene recorded badly enough to let it continue.
"There's more," Sophie said.
Of course there was.
She opened a folder on the external drive.
Inside were clips from 18C that Sophie had copied weeks earlier.
One showed Martin and Thomas Vale discussing the property sale.
Another showed Daniel reviewing the proxy.
A third showed Elaine alone in the office.
Sophie played it.
Elaine stood at the desk holding Claire's company tablet.
The timestamp was 5:51 p.m. on the night of the dinner.
Claire stopped breathing.
Elaine placed the tablet beside the proxy and typed something into it.
Then she took a photograph of the screen with her phone.
"She had my tablet before Martin did."
Sophie nodded.
"That's why I disappeared after the police arrived."
"You followed her?"
"I followed Dad first."
"Then I saw Mom go to 18C."
Rachel asked, "Did Elaine know you were watching?"
"I don't think so."
Claire stared at the paused image of her mother-in-law.
Elaine had told her that Martin kept the original documents in the study safe.
Elaine had later admitted knowing about 18C.
She had given Claire the key.
Every confession had come only after Claire discovered the previous lie.
Sophie clicked another clip.
This one had no video.
Only audio recorded through her phone while it sat inside her coat pocket.
Elaine's voice whispered, "If tonight works, Martin is finished."
Sophie answered, "And if it doesn't?"
Elaine said, "Then Claire will finally understand what kind of family she married into."
Claire felt the words like ice.
Sophie stopped the recording.
"I didn't know what she meant."
Claire did.
Elaine had not merely wanted evidence.
She had wanted Claire to see Martin clearly.
And perhaps Daniel too.
The price of that revelation had been Claire herself.
Rachel closed the laptop.
"We're speaking to Elaine with counsel present from now on."
Claire nodded.
Sophie reached for one of the phones.
"There's one final file."
She opened a photograph taken inside 18C.
It showed a handwritten list on Elaine's notepad.
Martin.
Vale.
Daniel.
Claire.
Beside each name was a number.
Martin - 31%.
Vale - 8%.
Daniel - 9%.
Claire - 26%.
At the bottom, Elaine had written a single equation.
26% + 9% = CONTROL.
Claire stared at it.

Elaine had claimed she wanted to stop Martin from taking Claire's shares.
But according to her own notes, she had been calculating exactly what could be done with them.
