Chapter 6 - The Debt Daniel Never Told Her About.

By sunrise, Claire had learned that betrayal rarely arrived as one clean truth.

It came in layers.

Each answer uncovered another question underneath it.

Elaine sat across from Claire and Rachel in a private conference room near the building lobby while the police continued processing Apartment 18C upstairs.

No one offered coffee.

No one pretended this was still a family matter.

Claire placed both hands around a bottle of water.

"Tell me about Daniel's debt."

Elaine looked toward the door.

"He should tell you himself."

"He had that chance."

Elaine lowered her eyes.

"Two years ago, Daniel started investing in a development project outside the company."

Claire frowned.

"What project?"

"A hotel conversion in Milwaukee."

"He told me he passed on that deal."

"He didn't."

Claire felt a familiar pressure building behind her ribs.

Daniel had spent months talking about that project when it first appeared.

Then one evening he came home and announced that the numbers did not make sense.

Claire had admired him for walking away.

Now even that memory had changed.

"How much did he lose?"

Elaine hesitated.

"More than two million."

Claire stared at her.

Rachel stopped typing.

"Two million dollars?"

Elaine nodded.

"He borrowed against future distributions from the family company."

"Without telling me?"

"Martin arranged it."

Claire laughed once, without humor.

"Of course he did."

Elaine continued.

"When the project failed, Martin covered part of the loss."

"And bought Daniel in the process."

Elaine did not disagree.

Claire thought about every argument from the last year.

Daniel insisting they should keep their finances separate until after the baby arrived.

Daniel becoming defensive whenever she asked why his savings account had fallen.

Daniel telling her his father was helping him restructure some investments.

The words had all been technically true.

That was Daniel's favorite kind of lie.

"Northline was paying him back?" Claire asked.

Elaine's face tightened.

"I don't know everything about Northline."

"You knew enough to search the office."

"I knew Martin was moving money through it."

"To Daniel?"

"Sometimes."

Claire looked at Rachel.

Rachel's expression said what Claire already understood.

The unexplained consulting payments may have been covering Daniel's debt.

"Why would Martin need my voting proxy if Daniel already owed him?" Claire asked.

Elaine answered immediately this time.

"Because Martin controls Daniel."

She paused.

"He doesn't control you."

Claire remembered the dinner.

"He tried."

Elaine's eyes filled with shame.

"Yes."

Claire's phone buzzed.

A news alert appeared from a local business site.

MERCER DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE HOSPITALIZED AFTER PRIVATE FAMILY DISPUTE.

Claire opened the article.

The story had been published seven minutes earlier.

It described a holiday gathering that had become heated after Claire allegedly experienced an emotional episode related to work stress.

A company spokesperson said no one had been seriously hurt.

Claire read the sentence twice.

"They already leaked a story."

Rachel took the phone.

Her jaw tightened.

The article quoted an unnamed source saying Claire had been under significant pressure during her pregnancy and had recently struggled with several major company decisions.

There was no mention of Martin's cigarette.

No mention of Daniel restraining her.

No mention of the video.

Elaine looked genuinely shocked.

"Martin wouldn't go to the press this fast."

Claire looked at her.

"You still think there are things he wouldn't do?"

Elaine went silent.

Rachel called the company's communications director.

No answer.

She called again.

Voicemail.

Claire's work email suddenly stopped syncing.

She tried logging into the company portal.

ACCESS DENIED.

She looked at Rachel.

"They locked me out."

Rachel immediately opened her own laptop.

"Screenshot everything."

Claire did.

Then another email arrived in her personal account.

It came from the corporate secretary.

Due to concerns regarding her current medical condition and in the interest of continuity, Claire Mercer was being placed on immediate administrative leave pending board review.

Claire's hand tightened around the phone.

"They did it."

"Did what?" Elaine asked.

Claire turned the screen toward her.

Elaine read the email and went pale.

"Martin can't do that alone."

"Apparently he didn't."

Rachel scanned the message.

"It says the executive committee approved it."

Claire knew the committee members.

Martin.

Daniel.

Thomas Vale.

Three men tied directly to the deal she had questioned.

"They're removing me before Monday."

Rachel nodded.

"And trying to make it look like a health decision."

Claire felt her fear transform into anger.

For years, she had worked harder than anyone in the room because she never wanted to be treated as the founder's daughter who inherited a seat.

Now the same men who praised her when she saved projects were trying to erase her with one paragraph about her condition.

Elaine whispered, "I'm sorry."

Claire looked at her.

"Stop apologizing."

Elaine blinked.

"Start telling the truth."

The conference room door opened.

The detective entered carrying a clear evidence sleeve.

Inside was a photocopy of the envelope with Nora Bell's name.

"Ms. Mercer, we photographed the contents."

Claire stood.

"Can I read it?"

The detective handed her several copied pages.

The first was a letter in Nora's handwriting.

Claire recognized it instantly.

Her knees nearly gave way.

The first line read:

Claire, if you are reading this, Martin has finally tried to take what he could never persuade me to give him.
