Chapter 11: The Man Who Vanished

For several long seconds, no one in the Bennett Technologies command center spoke.

Special Agent Marcus Reynolds' words echoed through the room.

"David Collins wasn't on board."

Daniel Harper broke the silence first.

"That's impossible."

"The aircraft was tracked the entire flight."

Reynolds nodded.

"It was."

"The cockpit crew never reported an emergency."

"The cabin door remained locked."

"The security seals were intact when the plane landed."

Victor Chen frowned.

"So where did he go?"

Reynolds answered honestly.

"We don't know."

Maya stared at the live flight data still displayed on the monitor.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

She walked closer.

"Can you send me the aircraft's flight log?"

Reynolds looked surprised.

"You think the answer is there?"

"I think the answer is somewhere."

Within seconds, the encrypted log appeared on Maya's screen.

She scrolled through hundreds of entries.

Altitude.

Heading.

Fuel consumption.

Cabin pressure.

Everything appeared normal.

Until one line caught her attention.

At 8:47 p.m., the aircraft had briefly descended from 39,000 feet to 28,000 feet for exactly seven minutes before climbing again.

Maya narrowed her eyes.

"Why did the jet descend?"

Reynolds frowned.

"The pilot reported unexpected turbulence."

Maya shook her head.

"No."

She enlarged the weather overlay.

"There wasn't any turbulence within one hundred miles."

The room became quiet.

Richard leaned forward.

"What are you thinking?"

Maya highlighted another section of the flight log.

"The transponder signal weakened during those seven minutes."

Ethan looked at the numbers.

"You're right."

"It almost disappeared."

Daniel frowned.

"Can someone intentionally weaken a transponder?"

Reynolds answered.

"Yes."

"But it's a federal offense."

Maya looked at Reynolds.

"Can you get me the maintenance history for that aircraft?"

"I'll have it in five minutes."

While they waited, Detective Laura Simmons entered carrying a thick evidence folder.

"We've finished searching David Collins' office."

She placed several items on the conference table.

A leather notebook.

An encrypted flash drive.

A framed family photograph.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Until Maya noticed the photograph.

She picked it up.

David stood beside a smiling woman and a teenage boy in front of a lake house.

"What about it?" Richard asked.

Maya pointed toward the background.

"Zoom in."

Detective Simmons handed the photo to Ethan.

He scanned it and enlarged the image.

Hidden behind the family stood another man.

Only half his face was visible.

Richard immediately recognized him.

"No..."

Daniel looked over.

"You know him?"

Richard's expression darkened.

"That's Charles Whitmore."

The room fell silent.

Maya looked up.

"Amanda Whitmore's husband?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"He served on our board until twelve years ago."

"What happened?"

"He resigned after disagreeing with my mother over a major research project."

Daniel frowned.

"I thought he moved overseas."

"So did everyone."

Richard stared at the photograph.

"He and Amanda disappeared within months of each other."

Maya folded her arms.

"They didn't disappear."

"They planned this."

At that moment, Reynolds returned to the video conference.

"I have the aircraft maintenance report."

Maya looked up.

"Anything unusual?"

"There was one unscheduled modification completed last month."

"What kind?"

Reynolds hesitated.

"The aircraft was fitted with an emergency external access hatch."

Daniel blinked.

"Why would a private jet need that?"

Reynolds answered quietly.

"It normally wouldn't."

Maya immediately understood.

"He left the aircraft."

Richard stared at her.

"At twenty-eight thousand feet?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"He transferred."

Silence.

Victor frowned.

"Transferred?"

"To another aircraft."

Detective Simmons looked skeptical.

"In midair?"

Maya nodded.

"There are military operations capable of aerial docking."

Daniel frowned.

"But private aviation?"

"It's extremely rare."

"But possible."

Reynolds leaned toward the camera.

"We'll check nearby flight records."

Twenty minutes later, another analyst joined the video call.

"Agent Reynolds."

"We found something."

Every eye turned toward the screen.

"At exactly 8:49 p.m., an unregistered cargo aircraft entered the same air corridor."

"Radar lost it twelve minutes later."

Maya whispered,

"He switched planes."

Reynolds nodded grimly.

"We believe so."

Richard slowly sat back in his chair.

"This was planned long before today."

"No," Maya corrected.

"This was planned years ago."

She looked toward Eleanor's journals lying beside her laptop.

Her grandmother had warned repeatedly that some people valued power more than innovation.

Perhaps she had suspected something much larger than poor leadership.

Just then, Ethan connected the recovered flash drive from David's office to an isolated forensic computer.

"It'll take a few minutes to decrypt."

The progress bar slowly advanced.

Five percent.

Ten.

Twenty.

Finally—

The drive opened.

Inside were only three folders.

Finance

Patents

Project Phoenix

Daniel frowned.

"Phoenix?"

Richard looked confused.

"I've never heard of it."

Maya clicked the folder.

A single document appeared.

Its title alone changed the atmosphere in the room.

Succession Plan – After Bennett Technologies Acquisition

Maya opened it.

The first page displayed a corporate logo.

Not Bennett Technologies.

Not Atlas Global Capital.

A completely different company.

Helix Dynamics International

Victor Chen stood abruptly.

"My God."

Daniel looked toward him.

"You know them?"

Victor nodded slowly.

"They're Bennett Technologies' biggest competitor."

Maya continued reading.

Every page outlined a step-by-step strategy.

Destabilize Bennett Technologies.

Remove Richard Bennett.

Steal the patent portfolio.

Acquire the company at a reduced valuation.

Merge intellectual property into Helix Dynamics.

Estimated completion:

October 18.

Two days from now.

Richard closed his eyes.

"This wasn't about me."

"No," Maya said quietly.

"It was never about you."

"It was about taking Grandma's company."

Before anyone could respond, the elevator doors opened.

A uniformed security officer hurried into the room.

"Mr. Harper!"

Daniel turned.

"What happened?"

"We just received an unexpected visitor."

"Who?"

The officer looked directly at Maya.

"A woman says she worked with Eleanor Bennett."

Richard frowned.

"Who is she?"

The officer handed Daniel a driver's license recovered at reception.

Daniel stared at the name.

Then slowly looked toward Maya.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Her name is..."

Amanda Whitmore.

The same Amanda Whitmore everyone believed had vanished eight years earlier.

And she was asking to see Maya Bennett.
