Chapter 18: The Forgotten Laboratory

For a long moment, no one spoke.
The blinking GPS marker on Ethan Cole's screen remained fixed over the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
A place Richard Bennett hadn't thought about in decades.
A place Maya had never heard of.
Amanda Whitmore quietly traced the address on Eleanor's handwritten note with her fingertips.
"Eleanor called it Haven."
Richard looked up.
"Haven?"
Amanda nodded.
"She refused to call it a laboratory."
"She said discoveries should begin in places that felt safe."
Daniel Harper glanced at his watch.
"It's ninety minutes from downtown Chicago if traffic cooperates."
Detective Laura Simmons immediately contacted the FBI.
"I want tactical teams en route to this address."
Special Agent Marcus Reynolds answered through the secure video call.
"They're already mobilizing."
"Can they get there before Henry Lawson?"
Reynolds hesitated.
"If he left when we think he did..."
"...probably not."
The room fell silent.
Maya folded Eleanor's note and slipped it carefully into her jacket pocket.
"I'm going."
Richard immediately objected.
"No."
Maya calmly met his eyes.
"He'll only stop if someone who understands Grandma's work is there."
Daniel nodded.
"She's right."
Amanda added quietly,
"And Eleanor expected Maya to be the one."
Richard looked at each of them.
Finally, he sighed.
"Then I'm coming too."
Forty minutes later...
A convoy of black SUVs sped north through the rain.
Maya sat beside Daniel in the lead vehicle.
Richard and Amanda followed in the second.
Detective Simmons coordinated with FBI agents over the radio.
Outside, the storm intensified.
Lightning flashed across the dark Illinois sky.
Inside the vehicle, no one wasted words.
Everyone understood what was at stake.
Maya stared out the rain-covered window.
"Tell me about Haven."
Amanda's voice came through the secure speakerphone connecting the two vehicles.
"Eleanor bought the property thirty-one years ago."
"There wasn't anything there except an abandoned farmhouse."
"What did she build?"
"A research lab beneath it."
Daniel glanced at Maya.
"Hidden?"
Amanda smiled faintly.
"So well hidden that even Bennett Technologies never knew it existed."
Richard spoke for the first time since leaving Chicago.
"I visited once."
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
"I was twelve."
"My mother showed me a wooden workbench."
"Nothing else."
Amanda laughed softly.
"Because she activated the concealment system before you arrived."
Richard blinked.
"There was a concealment system?"
"Eleanor enjoyed puzzles."
Back at FBI headquarters...
David Collins remained in the interrogation room.
Special Agent Reynolds received an urgent phone call.
When he returned, David looked up.
"They found Henry?"
Reynolds didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he placed a photograph on the table.
It showed an old farmhouse surrounded by trees.
David stared at it.
"Haven."
Reynolds noticed the recognition.
"You've been there."
David slowly nodded.
"Once."
"With Charles."
"What did you see?"
David hesitated.
"I never entered."
"Why not?"
"Charles wouldn't let me."
"He said..."
David looked down at the photograph.
"...only Eleanor's family could open the real laboratory."
Meanwhile...
The convoy crossed the Wisconsin state line.
Rain continued pounding the windshield.
Ethan called from Bennett Technologies.
"I've recovered old satellite images."
Daniel answered through the vehicle's speaker.
"Anything useful?"
"Actually..."
Ethan enlarged one of the images.
"The farmhouse isn't alone."
"What do you mean?"
"Thermal scans show an underground structure almost three times larger than the house itself."
Richard quietly whispered,
"My God."
Twenty minutes later...
The convoy turned onto a narrow gravel road surrounded by towering oak trees.
The rain had finally begun to ease.
Ahead, illuminated by the vehicles' headlights, stood an aging white farmhouse.
Its paint had faded.
The front porch sagged slightly with age.
It looked completely ordinary.
Too ordinary.
Amanda smiled sadly.
"Eleanor wanted it that way."
The FBI tactical team secured the perimeter.
Detective Simmons approached Maya.
"No movement outside."
Daniel scanned the property.
"No vehicles."
Richard frowned.
"Maybe we're early."
Maya slowly shook her head.
"No."
She pointed toward the muddy driveway.
Fresh tire tracks.
Only one set.
Leading to the farmhouse.
Inside...
The old house smelled of cedar wood and dust.
Bookshelves lined the walls.
A stone fireplace dominated the living room.
Everything appeared untouched.
As though time had stopped.
Richard walked slowly through the familiar hallway.
"I remember this place."
Amanda smiled.
"Your mother wanted you to remember only this part."
Maya examined every detail.
Then she noticed something strange.
The grandfather clock beside the fireplace wasn't keeping time.
Its hands pointed to exactly 8:15.
She gently touched the clock.
It moved.
Too easily.
She looked closer.
Tiny scratches surrounded its base.
"It's been used recently."
Richard walked over.
"What are you thinking?"
Maya smiled.
"This isn't a clock."
She carefully rotated it ninety degrees.
A low mechanical rumble echoed beneath the floor.
Everyone froze.
The fireplace slowly slid sideways.
Behind it...
A steel elevator descended into darkness.
Amanda quietly laughed.
"Only Eleanor would hide a laboratory behind a fireplace."
Before anyone could move...
A calm voice echoed upward from below.
"I wondered how long it would take."
Everyone immediately recognized it.
Henry Lawson.
Still calling himself Harold Sinclair to most of the world.
Richard stepped toward the hidden elevator.
"Henry."
The older man appeared at the bottom of the shaft, dressed in an immaculate navy suit despite the storm outside.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His expression remained composed.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
Instead...
He held an old leather notebook.
Eleanor Bennett's notebook.
Richard's voice hardened.
"Give it back."
Henry smiled.
"It was never yours."
Maya stepped forward.
"You've spent twenty-five years chasing my grandmother's work."
Henry looked directly at her.
"So you're Maya."
"Eleanor chose well."
Maya didn't respond.
Henry slowly held up the notebook.
"Do you know what's inside?"
"No."
"I do."
He smiled.
"And it changes everything you think you know about Eleanor Bennett."
Amanda's face lost all color.
"No..."
Henry looked at her.
"You never told them?"
Amanda whispered,
"Don't."
Henry ignored her.
He opened the notebook to a bookmarked page.
Then he looked directly at Maya.
"Your grandmother didn't hide Guardian because she feared people like Charles."
He paused.
"She hid it..."
"...because she discovered someone inside her own family could never be trusted."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Richard stared at Henry.
"What are you talking about?"
Henry smiled.
"I think it's finally time you learned why Eleanor rewrote her will three months before she died."
Then, with one deliberate motion, he stepped backward into the hidden laboratory.
The elevator doors began closing.
Maya lunged forward—
But they sealed shut just inches before she reached them.
The elevator immediately descended into the darkness below.
Taking Henry...
And Eleanor's notebook...
May you like
With it.
