Chapter 9: The Counterattack

The countdown glowed across Ethan Cole's largest monitor.
Patent Archive Deletion: 15% Complete.
Three hours had become less than two and a half.
Every second mattered.
Inside Bennett Technologies' emergency command center, the atmosphere had shifted from investigation to action.
Maya stood at the center of the room, studying the network map one last time.
Then she looked at everyone around the table.
"We're done chasing evidence."
"We stop the deletion first."
"Then we stop David Collins."
No one argued.
For the first time that night, every person in the room instinctively looked to Maya for direction.
Even Richard.
Ethan turned his monitor toward her.
"I've isolated the encrypted server."
"But without David's authorization key—"
Maya interrupted.
"We don't need his key."
Ethan blinked.
"We don't?"
She shook her head.
"He only thinks we do."
Richard frowned.
"I don't understand."
Maya smiled faintly.
"My grandmother taught me something through her journals."
"What's that?"
"When someone builds a system..."
"...they always leave themselves a way back in."
She picked up Eleanor Bennett's leather notebook and flipped through several pages.
One passage immediately caught her attention.
Never create a lock you cannot unlock yourself. One day, someone honest may need it more than you do.
Maya looked at Ethan.
"Show me the original patent authentication protocols from fifteen years ago."
"They're obsolete."
"I know."
"Show me anyway."
Within minutes, thousands of archived lines of legacy code filled the screen.
Most of the engineers ignored them.
Old systems were usually abandoned.
Maya didn't.
She scanned every line with astonishing speed.
Then she suddenly stopped.
"There."
She enlarged a hidden function buried inside the authentication software.
A legacy administrator override.
Richard stared at the screen.
"I've never seen that."
"You wouldn't."
"It wasn't documented."
Daniel looked surprised.
"Who wrote it?"
Maya smiled.
"My grandmother."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"If this still works..."
"...we can bypass David's key entirely."
Maya nodded.
"But only once."
"Why?"
"Because the override permanently disables itself after activation."
The room fell silent.
They had one opportunity.
No mistakes.
Maya rolled up the sleeves of her emerald blouse and sat at Ethan's workstation.
The keyboard clicked rapidly beneath her fingers.
Lines of code streamed across the monitors.
Firewall logs.
Authentication tokens.
Encryption certificates.
Victor Chen watched in amazement.
"How fast is she typing?"
Sandra laughed quietly.
"I stopped trying to keep up five minutes ago."
Richard simply watched his daughter.
For years he had assumed computers were just her hobby.
Now he realized...
He had never understood what she actually did for a living.
Twenty-five tense minutes passed.
Then—
A soft chime echoed through the room.
Ethan leaned forward.
"The override connected."
Maya didn't celebrate.
"Not yet."
She continued typing.
Suddenly a second alert appeared.
Unauthorized User Detected
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Maya looked up.
"It means David knows we're inside."
Hundreds of miles away...
David Collins' private jet had reached cruising altitude.
A flight attendant quietly placed a glass of sparkling water beside him.
He barely noticed.
His attention remained fixed on the secure tablet.
The deletion progress had suddenly stopped.
His expression darkened.
"What?"
A warning flashed across the screen.
Secondary Administrator Connected
David's heartbeat accelerated.
"Impossible."
No one else should have been able to access the archive.
He immediately opened a secure terminal and began typing.
Back in Chicago...
Maya's fingers flew across the keyboard.
Ethan watched another connection appear.
"He's online."
Richard looked confused.
"Can he see us?"
Maya nodded.
"He knows someone's fighting him."
Daniel asked,
"Can you identify his location?"
Ethan answered first.
"Not yet."
The signal keeps bouncing.
Maya studied the incoming traffic for several seconds.
Then she smiled.
"I don't need his location."
"What do you need?"
"His mistake."
David grew impatient.
He launched a countermeasure designed to disconnect the unknown user.
Instead...
The software asked him to verify his administrator identity.
Without thinking, he entered his executive authentication certificate.
The moment he pressed Enter...
Maya's eyes lit up.
"There."
Ethan looked at the screen.
"What happened?"
"He authenticated himself."
Victor frowned.
"So?"
"So now we know exactly who accessed the stolen archive."
Detective Simmons smiled.
"That's admissible evidence."
David realized his mistake one second too late.
He immediately attempted to disconnect.
Access denied.
"What?"
The screen flashed.
Session Locked by Administrator Override
David slammed his fist against the armrest.
"No!"
Passengers seated nearby turned to look.
He ignored them.
Everything was unraveling.
Inside Bennett Technologies...
Maya remained remarkably calm.
"Ethan."
"Record everything."
"Already recording."
"Daniel."
"Notify the FBI's cybercrime division."
Daniel nodded and stepped into the hallway.
Richard watched in stunned silence.
"My God..."
Maya never looked away from the monitor.
"He just handed us proof."
The deletion countdown reached twenty-three percent.
Still too high.
"We need to recover the patents now."
Ethan opened the backup interface.
"They're fragmented across six international servers."
"Can we restore them?"
"Yes."
"But downloading everything separately will take almost four hours."
Maya frowned.
"We don't have four hours."
She thought for a moment.
Then another idea formed.
"What if we don't download them?"
Everyone looked at her.
Victor asked,
"What do you mean?"
"We move the archive."
Silence.
Daniel returned.
"The FBI is mobilizing."
Maya continued.
"If we redirect the master encryption key..."
"...the servers will follow the new location automatically."
Ethan's mouth slowly fell open.
"I've never seen anyone do that."
She smiled.
"Neither has David."
Thousands of miles away, David stared at his tablet as the archive suddenly changed status.
Destination Server Updating...
His face lost all color.
"No..."
He whispered.
"She's migrating the entire network."
He had spent six years designing the theft.
Maya had found a way to dismantle it in less than two hours.
For the first time that night...
David Collins felt something he hadn't experienced in decades.
Fear.
Back in Chicago, progress bars filled every monitor.
Server One.
Transferred.
Server Two.
Transferred.
Server Three...
Completed.
Applause erupted inside the command center.
Richard looked at Maya with quiet amazement.
"You learned all this..."
She smiled without looking up.
"I paid attention when people underestimated me."
Richard lowered his eyes.
The words struck deeper than any accusation.
Just as the fourth server finished transferring, Detective Simmons' phone rang.
She answered immediately.
"Detective Simmons."
A pause.
Her expression hardened.
"What?"
Everyone looked toward her.
She slowly lowered the phone.
"We have another problem."
Daniel frowned.
"What happened?"
"The FAA just confirmed David Collins' private jet."
Richard asked,
"Where is he going?"
The detective answered quietly.
"He isn't flying to New York."
She looked directly at Maya.
"He's heading to Switzerland."
Ethan's fingers froze over the keyboard.
Everyone in the room understood why.
Switzerland wasn't just another destination.
It was home to the offshore banks connected to the shell corporations.
If David landed there before authorities intercepted him...
Recovering the stolen money could become nearly impossible.
Maya looked at the world map on the screen.
Then at the blinking icon representing David's aircraft.
Finally she spoke.
"Then we don't wait for him to land."
The room turned toward her.
May you like
"We stop him in the air."
