Chapter 13: The Return of David Collins

Every phone in the conference room continued vibrating with emergency notifications.
The FBI alert was identical on every screen.
URGENT: Suspect David Collins identified in downtown Chicago. Exercise caution. Do not approach. Federal agents responding.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Daniel Harper was the first to react.
"Lock the building down."
The head of corporate security immediately pressed the emergency access button beneath the conference table.
Throughout Bennett Technologies headquarters, electronic locks engaged one after another.
Lobby entrances.
Executive elevators.
Parking garage gates.
Research laboratories.
Every access point switched into restricted mode.
Detective Laura Simmons turned to the two FBI agents standing outside the room.
"I want every entrance covered."
One of the agents nodded.
"We already have tactical teams on the way."
"Estimated arrival?"
"Six minutes."
Amanda Whitmore quietly closed her briefcase.
"Six minutes may be too long."
Everyone looked at her.
"What do you mean?" Maya asked.
Amanda's expression grew serious.
"David never makes a move unless he already has an advantage."
Richard walked toward the rain-covered windows.
Below, police vehicles had already begun arriving outside the building.
Blue and red lights reflected across the wet Chicago streets.
"I don't understand."
He turned toward Amanda.
"If David escaped federal custody..."
"...why come back here?"
Amanda answered without hesitation.
"Because he doesn't care about the money anymore."
Silence.
"He wants Guardian."
Maya instinctively placed her hand on the small black metal case resting on the conference table.
The Guardian Archive.
The true legacy Eleanor Bennett had protected for decades.
Daniel frowned.
"He knows it's here?"
Amanda nodded.
"I believe he always suspected."
"He just didn't know who had it."
Before anyone could continue, Ethan Cole rushed into the room carrying his laptop.
"I found something."
He connected it to the conference room display.
Security cameras from outside the building appeared.
A black delivery van had parked across the street eight minutes earlier.
No company logo.
No license plates.
The rear doors remained closed.
Ethan zoomed in.
Heat signatures appeared inside the vehicle.
"Four people," he said quietly.
"They've been sitting there without moving."
Detective Simmons immediately recognized the pattern.
"That's a surveillance team."
At that exact moment, another security camera activated.
A man wearing a gray maintenance uniform entered the lobby carrying a toolbox.
The receptionist smiled politely.
"Good evening."
He nodded without speaking.
Then he presented an identification badge.
The receptionist scanned it.
The gate opened.
Ethan frowned.
"That's strange."
"What?"
"There wasn't any maintenance scheduled tonight."
The man disappeared into the service elevator.
Maya looked closely at the footage.
"Pause."
Ethan froze the image.
"Zoom in on his left hand."
The picture sharpened.
The man wore a wedding ring engraved with a tiny phoenix.
Amanda's face turned white.
"No..."
Maya looked toward her.
"You recognize it?"
Amanda whispered,
"Charles."
Richard stared.
"Charles Whitmore?"
Amanda nodded slowly.
"He always wore that ring."
Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.
"Security."
"I need the service elevator stopped now."
A tense silence followed.
Then the voice on the other end replied,
"Sir..."
"We've lost control."
Daniel's expression changed.
"What do you mean?"
"The elevator isn't responding."
Ethan quickly opened the building control system.
Someone had overridden the security network.
Every command returned the same message.
ACCESS DENIED
Maya stepped beside him.
"They're inside our system."
Ethan nodded.
"And whoever did it knows the building better than we do."
Without another word, Maya opened her laptop.
She connected directly to the emergency server Eleanor had designed years earlier.
Unlike the modern corporate network...
This one had never been connected to the internet.
It operated independently.
Exactly as Eleanor intended.
Amanda smiled faintly.
"She knew."
Maya looked up.
"Knew what?"
"That one day someone would compromise the main system."
The emergency network came online.
Instantly, Maya regained access to internal cameras the hackers hadn't disabled.
She checked the service elevator.
Empty.
Her eyebrows narrowed.
"He isn't there."
Richard frowned.
"But we just saw him."
Maya switched to another camera.
Then another.
Finally—
Parking Level Three.
The same man stepped out from a stairwell.
Only now he had removed the maintenance jacket.
Beneath it was a tailored black suit.
Although older...
There was no mistaking him.
Charles Whitmore.
Alive.
Amanda closed her eyes.
"I should have known."
Richard looked shocked.
"We buried an empty coffin."
Amanda nodded quietly.
"He made sure of it."
Charles calmly walked through the underground garage toward a private elevator few employees even knew existed.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"How does he know about that elevator?"
Richard answered slowly.
"My mother designed it."
Amanda looked toward him.
"So did Charles."
Everyone froze.
Richard frowned.
"What?"
Amanda sighed.
"Charles wasn't just my husband."
"He was Eleanor's original engineering partner."
Silence filled the room.
"He helped build Bennett Technologies."
The revelation landed harder than anyone expected.
Richard slowly shook his head.
"My mother never mentioned him."
Amanda's voice softened.
"Because after he chose greed over integrity..."
"...she erased him from the company's history."
A loud alarm suddenly echoed through the building.
Ethan looked at his monitor.
"The private elevator is moving."
"What floor?"
He swallowed.
"Thirty-six."
The executive floor.
The Guardian Archive.
Detective Simmons drew her service weapon.
"Everyone away from the windows."
The FBI agents quickly took defensive positions.
Daniel looked toward Maya.
"You should leave."
She calmly shook her head.
"No."
Amanda placed a hand on Maya's shoulder.
"This isn't your fight."
Maya looked directly at her.
"It became my fight the day Grandma trusted me with Guardian."
The elevator indicator climbed steadily.
Thirty-two.
Thirty-three.
Thirty-four.
Every number intensified the tension.
Richard quietly stepped beside his daughter.
For the first time in years...
Not as a controlling father.
Not as the CEO.
Simply as her parent.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Maya glanced at him.
"For everything."
She saw genuine regret in his eyes.
There wasn't time to answer.
The elevator reached the thirty-sixth floor.
A soft mechanical chime echoed through the hallway outside the conference room.
Everyone held their breath.
The doors slowly slid open.
Security cameras captured the scene in perfect clarity.
Only one man stepped out.
Charles Whitmore.
Seventy years old.
Perfectly tailored charcoal suit.
Silver hair neatly combed.
A black cane in one hand.
He smiled directly into the nearest security camera.
As though he knew they were watching.
Then he looked straight toward the conference room.
And, almost casually, he spoke.
"I know you're in there, Maya."
His voice echoed through the building's public address system.
"I've waited twenty-five years to meet Eleanor's successor."
He paused, smiling faintly.
"You can open the door willingly..."
"...or I can show you how much of this building still belongs to me."
At that exact moment, every light on the executive floor went dark.
The entire headquarters plunged into darkness.
May you like
Only the small blue glow from the Guardian Archive remained illuminated on the conference table.
