Chapter 12 - The Missing Paralegal

Marcus arranged the meeting at a roadside motel seventy miles from the city.

Emily Shore opened the door with a chain still attached.

She was thirty-four.

Thin.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

Julian showed her his identification.

She let him inside.

“I told Marcus I would only talk once.”

“That’s all I need.”

Emily looked toward the parking lot.

“Richard thinks I left the country.”

“Why?”

“Because I found the duplicate trust file.”

Julian sat across from her.

“What duplicate?”

“Richard created a false version of your father’s amendment.”

“What did it say?”

“That a surviving spouse could gain temporary voting authority if Martha became medically incompetent and Julian died.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Vanessa.”

Emily nodded.

“I prepared sections without understanding the whole structure.”

“When did you realize?”

“Four months ago.”

“What happened?”

“I confronted Richard.”

Emily rubbed her hands together.

“He told me it was estate planning.”

“I didn’t believe him.”

“So you copied everything.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Emily looked toward the bathroom.

She retrieved a flash drive taped beneath the sink.

“This contains emails, draft documents, financial transfers, and recordings.”

Julian took it.

“Recordings?”

“I started recording meetings after Richard threatened me.”

Julian opened the laptop Marcus had provided.

The first audio file began.

Richard’s voice.

Then Vanessa’s.

They were discussing Martha.

Vanessa said Martha was becoming suspicious.

Richard told her the medication should make confusion easier to document.

Julian felt sick.

Another recording.

Richard instructed Vanessa to push Julian toward updating his insurance.

Another.

Vanessa demanded to know when the plan would be finished.

Richard answered.

“Once you are married, Martha is legally incompetent, and Julian is gone.”

Julian stopped the recording.

Emily looked at him.

“There’s more.”

“I’ve heard enough.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You haven’t.”

Emily clicked another file.

A third voice appeared.

Julian recognized it immediately.

Claire.

His sister.

Julian slowly turned toward the speaker.

Claire’s recorded voice said,

“If Julian survives, none of this works.”

Julian did not move.

Emily whispered.

“I’m sorry.”

Julian replayed the sentence.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The woman he trusted most in the world was not merely aware of the conspiracy.

She was inside it.
