Chapter 17 - The Room of Witnesses

Richard stood.
“This ceremony is over.”
Julian turned toward him.
“No.”
“The ceremony never started.”
Confusion spread through the guests.
Vanessa backed away.
Julian removed a small remote from his pocket.
The ballroom screens came alive.
The first image showed the forged trust.
Then the authentic trust.
Then the insurance policy.
Vanessa stared upward.
Richard started toward the exit.
Two plainclothes officers blocked the doors.
Julian spoke calmly.
“For the last year, people close to my family have attempted to declare my mother mentally incompetent.”
Dr. Mercer shifted in his chair.
“They altered her medication.”
Mercer stood.
“I will not sit here while you—”
An investigator approached him.
“Doctor, sit down.”
The room went silent.
Julian played Emily’s recording.
Richard’s voice filled the ballroom.
Once you are married, Martha is legally incompetent, and Julian is gone.
Guests gasped.
Vanessa looked at Richard.
“You recorded us?”
Richard shouted.
“I did nothing.”
Julian played the next file.
Vanessa’s voice.
What if Julian refuses to change the beneficiary?
Richard answered.
Then we make sure he signs when he’s tired.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Julian stepped closer.
“Still want to talk about love?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
She turned toward the crowd.
“The Hale family destroyed my father.”
Murmurs spread.
Martha raised her voice.
“We exploited his collapse.”
Julian turned toward his mother.
She continued.
“And that was wrong.”
The room fell silent.
“But Daniel Bell committed fraud.”
Vanessa screamed.
“That is a lie.”
Martha shook her head.
“No.”
Julian displayed the original federal evidence.
Independent auditors.
Government records.
Daniel Bell’s own signed statements.
Vanessa stared at them.
Her confidence disappeared.
Richard stepped backward.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You told me those were fabricated.”
Richard said nothing.
“You said the Hales framed him.”
Still nothing.
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“You said my father was innocent.”
Richard finally looked at her.
“Your father was useful.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Julian saw the exact moment she understood.
Her revenge had never been hers.
Richard had built it.
Fed it.
Shaped it.
And pointed it toward the Hale family.
Vanessa whispered.
“You used me.”
Richard smiled without warmth.
“You wanted revenge.”
“I gave you a target.”
Then a voice came from the rear of the room.
“And now you’ve given us motive.”
Everyone turned.

Emily Shore stepped into the ballroom.
Richard Vale looked like a man seeing a ghost.
