Chapter 18 - The Man Who Started Everything

Richard’s composure finally collapsed.

“You.”

Emily walked forward.

“You told everyone I moved overseas.”

“You stole privileged documents.”

“I preserved evidence.”

Richard looked toward the officers.

“This is absurd.”

Julian played another recording.

This one was different.

Older.

Richard’s voice sounded younger.

Daniel Bell’s voice answered him.

The recording had come from an archived cassette Martha discovered among her husband’s belongings.

Daniel said,

“If Hale gets those numbers, my company is finished.”

Richard replied,

“That is the point.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Daniel continued.

“You promised to help me.”

Richard laughed.

“I promised to help myself.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“No.”

Richard’s face hardened.

Julian understood the rest before the recording finished.

Richard had played both sides.

He sold Bellmont information to Hale.

Then convinced Daniel Bell that Hale had betrayed him.

Later, he found Vanessa.

He raised her anger.

He rewrote her childhood.

And he waited.

Julian asked,

“Why?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because your father treated me like an employee.”

“He made you wealthy.”

“He made me useful.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“I built half the deals that created Hale Industrial.”

“Your name was on nothing.”

“That’s usually how lawyers work.”

“Not for me.”

Richard’s voice rose.

“I watched your father become a legend using strategies I designed.”

“I watched Martha sit beside him at galas while people thanked her for decisions I made.”

“I watched you inherit what I created.”

Julian stared at him.

“So you wanted the company.”

“I deserved the company.”

Richard pointed toward Vanessa.

“She was supposed to marry you.”

“Martha would be declared incompetent.”

“You would suffer a tragic accident.”

“Vanessa would inherit the insurance money and certain marital interests.”

“And then?”

Vanessa whispered.

Richard looked at her.

“You would have signed control to me.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never agreed to that.”

“You signed enough documents.”

Her face went white.

Richard smiled.

“You were never going to own Hale Industrial.”

Vanessa backed away.

“You were going to be blamed for Julian’s death.”

The room erupted.

Vanessa stared at him in horror.

Richard continued.

“Your fingerprints.”

“Your financial motive.”

“Your father’s history.”

“It was perfect.”

Vanessa lunged at him.

Officers caught her.

Richard stepped back.

Then Julian spoke.

“You forgot one thing.”

Richard looked at him.

“My father knew exactly what you were.”

Julian displayed the final page of the trust.

A clause Richard had never seen.

If fraud, coercion, or attempted manipulation by an adviser was proven, every discretionary payment, deferred compensation account, and partnership interest held by that adviser would be frozen pending civil recovery.

Richard’s face collapsed.

Julian stepped closer.

“You spent thirty years trying to steal my father’s empire.”

“And today, you lost your own.”
