Chapter 7 - The Letter from the Dead

First Commonwealth Bank opened at nine.

Julian arrived at eight fifty-eight.

Claire came with him.

The safe-deposit box contained three items.

A sealed envelope.

A notarized trust document.

And a USB drive.

Julian opened the envelope first.

The handwriting belonged to his father.

Julian,

If you are reading this, then I failed to prevent something I feared for many years.

There are people who believe the Hale family owns too much.

Some hate us for our wealth.

Others want the company because they believe it was stolen from them.

The danger will not come from a stranger.

It will come through trust.

Through marriage.

Through friendship.

Or through someone you already consider family.

Julian stopped reading.

Claire looked at him.

“Keep going.”

He did.

Never allow a spouse, adviser, or outside trustee to gain control of Hale Industrial without reviewing the sealed amendment.

If Martha’s competence is ever challenged, assume the challenge may be strategic.

Trust your mother.

And if Richard Vale ever tells you there is no second amendment, he is lying.

Julian slowly lowered the letter.

Claire whispered.

“Richard.”

Julian opened the trust document.

The amendment dramatically changed the succession rules.

No spouse could receive controlling voting rights.

If Martha became incapacitated, an independent three-member committee would oversee the family trust.

And Richard Vale was specifically barred from serving on that committee.

Claire read the line twice.

“Dad knew.”

Julian inserted the USB drive into his laptop.

There was one video file.

Their father appeared on screen.

He looked thin.

Cancer had already hollowed his face.

“If you are seeing this, I am probably gone.”

Julian felt his throat tighten.

His father continued.

“Richard Vale betrayed me once.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“He sold confidential information during the Bellmont acquisition.”

Julian stared at the screen.

“I chose not to prosecute him because I believed twenty years of friendship deserved mercy.”

Their father looked directly into the camera.

“That may have been the greatest mistake of my life.”

The video ended.

For several seconds, neither sibling spoke.

Then Claire whispered.

“What does this have to do with Vanessa?”

Julian closed the laptop.

“Maybe everything.”

His phone rang.

It was Hale Manor’s head of security.

Julian answered.

“Mr. Hale.”

The man sounded frightened.

“There’s been an incident.”

“What happened?”

“Someone broke into your father’s study.”

Julian stood.

“What was taken?”

The guard hesitated.

“Nothing.”

Julian frowned.

“Then why are you calling?”

“Because whoever entered the room left something behind.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

Julian felt a chill.

“Of what?”

The guard lowered his voice.

“Your fiancée.”

“And?”

“She’s standing beside Richard Vale.”

May you like

The guard paused.

“The photo is dated twelve years ago.”
