Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The morning of our tenth anniversary started with a familiar lie.
Julian kissed my cheek and handed me a beautiful bouquet of imported white orchids.
He looked into my eyes with that signature charm that had won me over a decade ago.
He told me he had a massive presentation for a new corporate client and would unfortunately have to stay late at the office.
He promised he would make it up to me over the weekend with a luxurious trip to Napa Valley.
I smiled and told him I completely understood his situation.
After all, I was a successful businesswoman who knew the relentless demands of a high-stakes career.
I kissed him goodbye and drove downtown to my flagship wellness spa.
The entire day, my dedicated staff kept congratulating me on a decade of happy marriage.
They brought out a custom cake and toasted to my continued happiness and success.
I felt a deep sense of pride in the beautiful life I had built from the ground up.
But around three in the afternoon, a massive and unexpected thunderstorm rolled into the city.
Appointments were canceled as the local streets flooded with heavy rain.
I decided to close the spa early and go home to enjoy a quiet afternoon.
I thought I would surprise Julian by cooking his favorite meal so it would be ready when he finally got off work.
I stopped at the gourmet market to buy fresh truffles and expensive dry-aged steaks.
I drove through the pouring rain, imagining a quiet, romantic evening by our grand fireplace.
I pulled up to our gated estate and immediately noticed the house was completely dark.
The security system app on my phone indicated that no alarms were currently set.
I parked my luxury SUV in the garage and grabbed the heavy bags of groceries.
I stepped inside the grand foyer, shaking the cold rain from my designer coat.
The house was unnervingly quiet and still.
I assumed Mia was upstairs in her room or out running errands for the week.

I walked toward the gourmet kitchen, my heels clicking softly against the polished marble floor.
That was when I saw the first sign that my perfect life was a complete illusion.
