Chapter 6 - The Steaming Wreckage

The thick, heavy steam rolled out of the master bathroom like a toxic cloud.

It carried the suffocating scent of expensive lavender bath oils and cheap betrayal.

Beatrice stood completely frozen in the doorway, her manicured hands clamped tightly over her mouth.

Clara let out a second, sharper shriek and quickly turned her face away from the humiliating scene.

Inside the heart-shaped jacuzzi, absolute chaos erupted in a matter of seconds.

Julian scrambled violently against the slippery marble edges of the deep tub.

He desperately grabbed for a thick white towel that was hanging just out of his frantic reach.

His face was flushed a deep, ugly crimson from both the stifling heat and the sudden, overwhelming shame.

Mia cowered in the farthest corner of the bubbling water, crossing her arms tightly over her bare chest.

She let out a pathetic, high-pitched whimper and tried to sink lower beneath the churning foam.

The heated floors had turned the entire room into an unbearable, suffocating sauna.

Sweat poured down Julian’s face as he finally managed to yank the large towel off the brass rack.

He wrapped it clumsily around his waist, nearly slipping on the wet marble tiles as he stepped out.

His eyes darted wildly between his horrified mother, his disgusted sister, and my completely emotionless face.

He opened his mouth to speak, but only a pathetic, choked sound managed to escape his throat.

Beatrice finally found her voice, and it was shrill enough to shatter the rain-glass windows.

She demanded to know what on earth her son was doing with the hired help.

She did not direct her furious anger at Julian for breaking his sacred marital vows.

Instead, she pointed a shaking, jewel-encrusted finger directly at the terrified girl in the tub.

Beatrice screamed that Mia was a filthy little homewrecker who had deliberately seduced her innocent son.

Mia burst into loud, hysterical tears, aggressively shaking her head from side to side.

She cried out that Julian had promised he was going to leave his wife very soon.

She sobbed that Julian had sworn they were entirely in love and destined to be together.

That single, pathetic confession hung heavily in the suffocating, humid air of the bathroom.

Julian spun around and viciously yelled at Mia to shut her mouth immediately.

He frantically turned back to me, his hands raised in a desperate gesture of surrender.

He swore to me that it meant absolutely nothing and that it was a terrible, stupid mistake.

He begged me to understand that the immense pressure of his job had simply driven him to a moment of total weakness.

I stood completely still, watching him unravel like a cheap, poorly knitted sweater.

May you like

I did not scream, I did not cry, and I certainly did not offer him any forgiveness.

I simply looked at the pathetic man I had loved for ten years and felt absolutely nothing but cold disgust.
