Chapter 12 - Claire Speaks

My attorneys advised silence.

My father agreed.

Then Grant went public.

He released a statement accusing me of emotional instability.

He claimed our marriage had been troubled for years.

He said I had physically confronted Vanessa.

He called the incident at the mansion “a private domestic disagreement now being weaponized by wealthy outsiders.”

Wealthy outsiders.

He meant my father.

The statement spread everywhere.

Business reporters picked it up.

Photographers appeared outside courthouses.

Anonymous accounts began calling me vindictive.

Spoiled.

Crazy.

Grant expected me to hide.

Instead, I asked Rachel one question.

“Can I speak without hurting the investigation?”

She considered it.

“Yes.”

So I did.

I did not give an interview.

I did not sit beneath dramatic lights.

I did not attack Grant's company.

I released a seventy-eight-second statement.

“My husband struck me six times.”

“I sought medical treatment.”

“I reported the assault.”

“I will allow the evidence and the courts to determine what happens next.”

“I will not argue with anyone who believes a woman should remain silent to protect the reputation of the man who hurt her.”

“That is all I intend to say.”

The video ended.

By that evening, it had been viewed millions of times.

More importantly, three former Whitmore employees contacted investigators.

One described fake invoices.

Another described pressure to alter construction costs.

The third had something even worse.

He had been ordered to delete safety reports involving structural defects at a residential project.

One building was occupied.

Families lived there.

Suddenly the fraud had human consequences beyond bank accounts.

Arthur immediately funded independent engineers to inspect the property.

Not secretly.

Not through influence.

Openly.

The inspection discovered dangerous load-bearing defects in an unfinished section.

Residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Grant blamed me again.

But his words were losing power.

People had started looking at documents instead of listening to his voice.

That night, my father found me alone in the kitchen.

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

He nodded.

“That may be the healthiest answer you've given me in years.”

I looked at him.

“I kept protecting Grant because admitting the truth felt like admitting I had failed.”

Arthur sat beside me.

“Choosing the wrong man was a mistake.”

He touched my hand.

May you like

“Staying forever would have been the failure.”

For once, I believed him.
