Chapter 14 - The Night He Came Back

At 1:18 a.m., an alarm sounded at the Vance estate.
Daniel was at my bedroom door within seconds.
“Stay inside.”
“What happened?”
“Vehicle breached the outer gate.”
My blood went cold.
“Grant?”
“We don't know.”
Security lights flooded the property.
Cameras showed a dark sedan stopped near the service road.
A man climbed out.
Even on grainy footage, I recognized the way he walked.
Grant.
He was alone.
Daniel called police.
Grant reached the inner gate and began shouting.
“CLAIRE!”
I stood behind the reinforced glass upstairs.
“CLAIRE, COME OUT!”
He looked nothing like the man from our wedding photographs.
His shirt was untucked.
His hair was wet.
He had lost weight.
“YOUR FATHER IS LYING TO YOU!”
Daniel ordered me away from the window.
I stayed.
Grant gripped the gate.
“WE CAN FIX THIS!”
His voice cracked.
For one second, I remembered the man I thought I married.
The man who brought coffee to my office.
The man who danced with my mother at our wedding.
The man who held me after she died.
Then Grant screamed.
“YOU OWE ME!”
The illusion vanished.
Police arrived.
Grant backed away.
He claimed he only wanted to speak to his wife.
The protective order said otherwise.
He was arrested.
Inside the sedan, officers found three phones.
One belonged to Grant.
One was disposable.
The third belonged to Richard Voss.
That discovery exploded the investigation.
Richard claimed the phone had been stolen.
Grant claimed he had found it.
The phone contained messages between them.
Delete Hale files.
Move Northstar archive.
Claire cannot control narrative.
And one message sent the morning after Grant assaulted me.
If Arthur moves, trigger the offshore transfers.
Investigators now had evidence suggesting Grant and Richard attempted to hide assets after the assault.
Richard was arrested two days later on unrelated financial charges connected to federal contracts.
The machine protecting Grant was breaking apart piece by piece.
I watched the news from my father's study.
Arthur turned off the television.
“You don't look happy.”
“I thought I would.”
“Revenge is loud before you get it.”
He looked at me.
“Afterward, it can be strangely quiet.”
I understood.
I did not want Grant suffering in a cell because suffering pleased me.
I wanted him powerless to do this again.

Those were not the same thing.
And understanding the difference changed what I wanted from the ending.
