Chapter 19 - No Mercy

Sentencing happened three months later.

The courtroom was full.

Grant's lawyers asked for leniency.

They spoke about his charitable donations.

His business achievements.

His difficult childhood.

His public humiliation.

Then Grant stood.

He finally apologized.

Sort of.

“I regret the pain caused by choices made during an extremely stressful period.”

Choices made.

Pain caused.

Even now, he could not say it.

I hit my wife.

I forged her signature.

I stole.

I lied.

I threatened.

He still needed language to stand between himself and responsibility.

Then the judge invited me to speak.

I walked to the podium.

For months, I had wondered what I would say.

I thought about those four words.

Show him no mercy.

They once meant destruction.

Now they meant truth without protection.

“My husband believed mercy meant silence.”

I looked at Grant.

“He believed forgiveness meant permission.”

“He believed love meant access to another person's dignity, money, body, and future.”

“I don't ask this court to punish him because I hate him.”

“I ask this court not to protect him from the consequences he spent years forcing other people to carry.”

Grant finally looked away.

The judge sentenced him to years in federal prison for the financial crimes.

The assault case carried additional penalties and restrictions.

Restitution orders followed.

Richard received his own sentence.

Martin received less because of cooperation.

Vanessa avoided prison but accepted probation, financial penalties, and years of legal supervision.

She never complained.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

“Claire, do you feel vindicated?”

“Claire, was this revenge?”

“Claire, do you forgive him?”

I stopped.

Cameras moved closer.

“I don't know whether forgiveness is something Grant needs from me.”

I looked toward the courthouse doors.

“But I know this.”

“He doesn't get my silence anymore.”

Then I walked away.

My father was waiting beside the car.

“Ready?”

“Yes.”

“Where to?”

I smiled.

“Anywhere that isn't here.”

Arthur opened the door.

As we pulled away, I realized my father had honored my request.

He had shown Grant no mercy.

May you like

Not by destroying him unfairly.

By refusing to protect him from the truth.
