Chapter 18 - The Trial

Grant rejected the first plea agreement.

Then the second.

He insisted on fighting.

His criminal trial began fourteen months after the night in the rain.

By then, the bruises had disappeared.

The memories had not.

I testified on the fourth day.

Grant sat twenty feet away.

He looked directly at me when I entered.

I expected fear.

I expected rage.

Instead, I felt something unexpected.

Distance.

The prosecutor asked about our marriage.

Then the night of the assault.

I described each slap.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

The courtroom was silent.

Grant's attorney tried to suggest I had exaggerated.

“Mrs. Vance, you were angry about your husband's affair, correct?”

“Yes.”

“You confronted Ms. Cole?”

“Yes.”

“You raised your voice?”

“Yes.”

“So emotions were high.”

“Yes.”

“Isn't it possible your husband was trying to restrain you?”

“No.”

“How can you be certain?”

I looked at the attorney.

“Because restraint does not require hitting someone six times and throwing her barefoot into a storm.”

No more questions came about that.

Then came the financial evidence.

Emails.

Spreadsheets.

Forged documents.

Bank transfers.

Server destruction.

Martin testified.

Vanessa testified.

Hannah testified about Grant's pattern of threats.

Richard Voss had already entered a separate cooperation agreement.

He testified too.

Grant watched former allies dismantle him one fact at a time.

The most damaging moment came from Grant himself.

Prosecutors played a recording recovered from Richard's phone.

Grant's voice filled the courtroom.

“If Claire signs the transfer, we're covered.”

Richard asked what happened if I refused.

Grant laughed.

“She'll sign.”

“She always does what I tell her eventually.”

I closed my eyes.

Years of my marriage lived inside that sentence.

The jury deliberated for two days.

When they returned, Grant stood.

Guilty.

Then another count.

Guilty.

Then another.

And another.

The courtroom did not erupt.

Real endings rarely do.

Grant simply sat down.

For the first time since I had known him, he had no command left to give.
