Chapter 1 – The Call Everyone Feared

Chapter 1 – The Call Everyone Feared

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

The only sound was my daughter's quiet sobbing against my shoulder.

I wiped mashed potatoes from her hair with trembling fingers while my husband glared at me as though I had caused the entire scene.

"Stop pretending to be the victim," he snapped.

"My mother was teaching her a lesson."

Teaching.

He actually called that cruelty a lesson.

Margaret folded her arms proudly.

"Children like her need discipline. If she grows up disrespectful, that's your fault."

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Some looked away.

Others secretly raised their phones.

They weren't helping.

They were recording.

I ignored every stare.

My daughter mattered more.

I gently removed my jacket and wrapped it around her tiny shoulders.

"It's okay," I whispered.

"You didn't do anything wrong."

She looked up with swollen eyes.

"But... Grandma said I'm garbage."

Those words shattered something inside me.

"No."

I kissed her forehead.

"You are the greatest gift I've ever received."

Behind us, Margaret laughed.

"Oh, spare everyone the drama."

Then my husband pointed toward the ballroom entrance.

"If you're going to make a scene, leave."

His words hurt more than the slap.

For nine years, I had endured every insult from his family.

Not anymore.

I calmly unlocked my phone.

One name sat at the top of my favorites.

I pressed Call.

"Hello?"

A familiar voice answered immediately.

"Dad."

My voice remained steady.

"I need you."

There was only one second of silence.

"What happened?"

"They humiliated your granddaughter."

Another pause.

Then came six quiet words.

"I'm on my way."

The call ended.

I slipped the phone back into my purse.

Margaret smirked.

"Calling your father?"

"What can an old retired man possibly do?"

I looked directly into her eyes.

"You'll find out."

May you like

For the first time that evening...

Margaret's smile disappeared.
