Chapter 4 – A Daughter's Choice

Chapter 4 – A Daughter's Choice

The wedding ended early.

Guests quietly left without saying goodbye.

Sponsors withdrew support before midnight.

The charity foundation announced an emergency investigation.

Business partners suspended negotiations.

My husband came home after midnight.

He stood in the doorway looking exhausted.

"I made a mistake."

I looked at him for a long moment.

"No."

"You made a choice."

He lowered his head.

"I was trying to keep peace with my mother."

"You sacrificed your wife and daughter to do it."

He had no answer.

My daughter slowly walked into the room holding her favorite stuffed rabbit.

She looked at her father.

"Daddy..."

Hope briefly returned to his eyes.

Then she softly asked...

"If Grandma calls me garbage again..."

"Will you hit Mommy again?"

His face collapsed.

Tears filled his eyes.

But some questions arrive too late.

Some wounds never heal.

I quietly placed divorce papers onto the coffee table.

"They've already been signed."

He stared at them in disbelief.

"You planned this?"

"I planned to protect my daughter."

For the first time...

He realized he had already lost us.
