Chapter 14 - Forty-Eight Hours

Margaret did not leave voluntarily.

Forty-eight hours passed.

Then sixty.

On the third morning, authorized representatives arrived with legal documentation and security personnel.

Margaret had invited reporters.

She intended to create a spectacle.

Cameras lined the road.

Margaret walked onto the front steps wearing pearls, a tailored cream suit, and the expression of a persecuted queen.

“This property has belonged to my family for generations.”

That part was true.

The Hawthornes had built the original house decades earlier.

What Margaret did not mention was the debt.

She did not mention the restructuring.

She did not mention Claire’s capital.

She did not mention the signed agreements.

Claire stayed away.

Andrew handled everything.

Reporters watched boxes being carried outside.

Margaret accused Claire of cruelty.

Then Arthur arrived.

The crowd became quiet.

Margaret stared at her husband.

“What are you doing here?”

Arthur walked toward the reporters.

“For years, I allowed my wife to blame Claire for problems that began with me.”

Margaret’s face changed.

“Arthur.”

He continued.

“My investment decisions nearly destroyed this family.”

“Stop.”

“Claire saved us.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“You pathetic coward.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Yes.”

The word silenced her.

“I was a coward.”

He turned toward the cameras.

“And my cowardice helped create this.”

Margaret slapped him.

The cameras captured everything.

Arthur barely reacted.

Security personnel moved between them.

Daniel arrived seconds later.

Margaret pointed at him.

“Tell them.”

Daniel stopped near his father.

“Tell them this woman is stealing our home.”

Daniel looked directly into the cameras.

“She isn’t.”

Margaret’s mouth opened.

Daniel continued.

“Claire financed the restructuring.”

“No.”

“She protected this family for three years.”

“Daniel.”

“I took credit for things I didn’t earn.”

Reporters began shouting questions.

Daniel ignored them.

Margaret stared at her son.

“You choose her?”

Daniel shook his head.

“This isn’t about choosing Claire.”

His voice broke.

“It’s about finally refusing to choose you over everyone else.”

Margaret stepped backward.

For the first time, she seemed old.

Not powerful.

Not elegant.

Just frightened.

Then anger returned.

“You will regret this.”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I already regret almost everything.”

The confrontation ended before noon.

Margaret’s belongings were transferred to storage.

She moved temporarily into the Naples condominium she had once insisted did not exist.

Hawthorne Estate became empty.

Claire did not celebrate.

She visited the property alone two days later.

The terrace was quiet.

The dessert table was gone.

She stood where Noah had collapsed.

For several seconds, she could hear everything again.

His frightened voice.

Margaret’s contempt.

Daniel demanding an apology.

Claire closed her eyes.

Then she heard small footsteps behind her.

Rachel had brought Noah.

He ran toward Claire.

“Mommy.”

She crouched.

Noah pointed toward the garden.

“Can we see the fountain?”

Claire hesitated.

Then she took his hand.

“Yes.”

They walked together.

Noah did not remember the property as a financial asset.

To him, it was simply the place where Grandma Margaret had frightened him.

Claire realized she did not want to live there.

She did not want revenge to become another kind of prison.

That night, she called Andrew.

“Sell it.”

“The estate?”

“Yes.”

He sounded surprised.

“You control it outright.”

“I know.”

“What do you want done with the proceeds?”

Claire looked at Noah sleeping beside her.

“Pay off every legitimate creditor.”

“And the remainder?”

Claire had already decided.

“Put part of it into a trust for Noah.”

“And the rest?”

May you like

She smiled faintly.

“I have an idea.”
