Chapter 4 - The Recording

The investigators did not arrest Margaret.

That almost made her more confident.

They explained that they were documenting the incident involving Noah and requested a voluntary interview.

Margaret refused.

“You have absolutely no right to interrogate me inside my own home.”

Daniel flinched at the words.

One investigator calmly looked around the entrance hall.

“We can speak through your attorney.”

“I have nothing to hide.”

“Then perhaps speaking with us would help.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel stepped between them.

“My mother will have counsel contact you.”

The investigators left their cards.

As soon as the door closed, Margaret turned on Daniel.

“You should have defended me.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I just did.”

“No, you acted ashamed.”

“Mother, there’s a recording.”

Her expression changed.

“What recording?”

Daniel explained the terrace camera.

For the first time, Margaret seemed genuinely frightened.

“That camera doesn’t record sound.”

“The new one does.”

Margaret said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“It recorded you saying exposure builds resilience.”

“That proves nothing.”

“It recorded Claire telling you the tart contained peanuts.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“She was overreacting.”

“It recorded Noah choking.”

“He was breathing.”

“After Claire gave him epinephrine.”

Margaret slammed her glass onto a table.

“Stop talking like her lawyer.”

Daniel stared at his mother as though seeing her clearly for the first time.

He remembered Claire kneeling on the terrace.

He remembered Noah trembling.

He remembered Margaret standing with champagne in her hand.

Worst of all, he remembered himself.

He had cared more about being embarrassed than about his son.

That realization followed him upstairs.

He entered his bedroom and found Claire’s side of the closet nearly empty.

She had not taken everything.

Only essentials.

It somehow made the room feel more abandoned.

Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.

His phone rang.

It was his attorney.

“Daniel, we have a problem.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Which one?”

“The custody filing includes video evidence.”

“I know.”

“There is more.”

His attorney explained that Claire was requesting temporary sole decision-making authority regarding Noah’s medical care.

She was not asking the court to permanently remove Daniel from Noah’s life.

That distinction mattered.

It also made Claire appear measured.

“She’s not behaving vindictively,” the attorney said.

Daniel stared at the floor.

“She usually doesn’t.”

“You need to stop your family from attacking her publicly.”

“I’m trying.”

“Try harder.”

The temporary hearing was scheduled for Monday.

Daniel asked what his chances were.

His attorney paused.

“That depends on what the video shows.”

Daniel did not answer.

“Daniel?”

“It’s bad.”

“How bad?”

“My son couldn’t breathe.”

Another silence.

“And what did you do?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I told my wife to apologize to my mother.”

His attorney exhaled slowly.

“Then Monday is going to be difficult.”

Across town, Claire tucked Noah into bed.

He looked up at her.

“Grandma Margaret is mad at me?”

Claire’s heart broke.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Did I do something bad?”

“No.”

She sat beside him.

“You did absolutely nothing wrong.”

“Daddy was mad.”

Claire brushed his hair from his forehead.

“Daddy made a bad choice.”

Noah thought about that.

“Is Daddy bad?”

Claire shook her head.

“People can make terrible choices without being entirely terrible.”

Noah nodded sleepily.

Claire kissed his forehead.

When she left the room, Andrew was waiting in the hallway.

“Claire.”

She stopped.

“The bank called.”

“What happened?”

“Someone tried to access one of the estate accounts using your old authorization credentials.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“Daniel?”

Andrew shook his head.

“The request came from Margaret.”

May you like

Claire looked toward Noah’s closed bedroom door.

The custody fight had suddenly become only one piece of something much larger.
