Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Final Weapon
Margaret’s evidence arrived at three newspapers before dawn.
The package contained bank statements, emails, contracts, and photographs.
At first glance, they appeared devastating.
They suggested Claire had quietly purchased Hawthorne debt while pretending to help Daniel.
They implied she had intentionally allowed the family to become dependent on her.
They even suggested she had planned to seize Hawthorne Estate from the beginning.
One headline described Claire as “the secret predator behind the Hawthorne collapse.”
Andrew called at six fifteen.
“Don’t read anything.”
“I already did.”
“Claire.”
“Are the documents real?”
“Some are.”
“And the others?”
“Altered.”
Claire sat upright.
Andrew explained that genuine emails had been mixed with edited records.
Dates were changed.
Paragraphs were removed.
One message had been altered to make it appear Claire intended to force Daniel’s parents out once they became financially dependent.
The original said the opposite.
Claire had written that she would never force Daniel’s parents from their home as long as the arrangement remained financially responsible.
Margaret had deleted that sentence.
Claire stared at the sunrise beyond Rachel’s window.
“So we release the originals.”
“Eventually.”
“Why eventually?”
“Because Margaret may have committed another crime by distributing falsified financial records.”
Andrew had already notified the relevant attorneys.
Claire’s instinct was to fight immediately.
Then she stopped herself.
Margaret wanted speed.
Claire chose patience.
At Hawthorne Estate, Margaret celebrated.
She drank coffee in the drawing room while Victor Lang assured her the headlines were already damaging Claire.
Daniel arrived unexpectedly.
Margaret smiled.
“You finally came home.”
“This isn’t my home anymore.”
Her smile faded.
Daniel placed a printed article on the table.
“You altered Claire’s emails.”
Margaret shrugged.
“I clarified them.”
“You falsified evidence.”
“I showed people what she really meant.”
Daniel looked at Victor.
“And you helped?”
Victor stood.
“This is a family matter.”
Daniel laughed.
“No.”
He removed his phone.
“This is evidence.”
Victor’s face changed.
Margaret stepped forward.
“You wouldn’t dare.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You gave my son peanuts.”
“I made a mistake.”
“You forged Claire’s signature.”
“I protected us.”
“You used my signature on documents I didn’t understand.”
“You were too busy playing businessman to understand anything.”
The words landed hard.
Daniel slowly nodded.
“There it is.”
Margaret realized too late that she had gone too far.
Daniel continued recording.
“You never believed I saved this family.”
Margaret’s face twisted.
“Of course not.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with humiliation.
“You knew it was Claire.”
“I knew she had money.”
“And you let everyone praise me.”
“Because you are a Hawthorne.”
Daniel laughed without humor.
“And Claire?”
“She married into us.”
There was the entire family philosophy in six words.
Claire had paid the bills.
Claire had saved the estate.
Claire had preserved Daniel’s reputation.
Yet Margaret still considered her an outsider.
Daniel ended the recording.
Victor moved toward him.
“Give me the phone.”
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
Victor grabbed his wrist.
The struggle lasted seconds.
A glass shattered.
Margaret screamed.
Daniel shoved Victor away.
Victor struck the edge of the table and fell.
Nobody noticed the open study door.
Nobody noticed Jonathan standing there.
And nobody noticed that Jonathan had also recorded everything.
By noon, Claire possessed both videos.
She watched Margaret admit that she knew Claire had funded the family rescue.
Then she heard Margaret say the words that ended whatever sympathy Claire still possessed.
“She married into us.”
Claire closed the laptop.
“No more protection.”
Andrew looked at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
