Chapter 6 - The Forged Signature

Claire did not go to Hawthorne Estate herself.
Her attorney went with a forensic document specialist and a court-authorized property representative.
Daniel allowed them inside.
Margaret tried to stop them.
She failed.
The safe was exactly where Jonathan said it would be.
Behind an oil painting of Daniel’s grandfather stood a steel door Margaret claimed belonged exclusively to her husband.
Daniel knew the combination.
Inside were jewelry boxes, old bonds, passports, family photographs, and four folders carrying Claire’s name.
Andrew opened the first.
Claire’s signature appeared beneath an authorization transferring management rights over several assets to Margaret Hawthorne.
It looked convincing.
It was also fake.
The second document supposedly authorized Margaret to borrow against collateral controlled by Bennett Capital.
Fake.
The third gave Daniel permanent voting authority over one of Claire’s investment entities.
Daniel stared at it.
“I have never seen this.”
Andrew looked at him.
“You’re listed as a beneficiary.”
“I didn’t sign it.”
The forensic specialist inspected the document.
Daniel’s signature was genuine.
Claire’s was not.
Daniel’s stomach turned.
“When did I sign that?”
Margaret stood near the doorway.
“You sign dozens of documents.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What did you tell me this was?”
“I don’t remember.”
“You remember everything.”
Margaret’s silence answered him.
Daniel took one step toward her.
“You made me part of this.”
“I protected you.”
“You used me.”
“You are my son.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
Andrew closed the folder.
“We’ll be taking these for forensic review.”
Margaret rushed forward.
“You will not remove private family documents.”
Daniel blocked her.
“Yes, he will.”
Margaret stared at her son.
Something permanent passed between them.
The obedience she had depended on for decades was gone.
That evening, Claire reviewed photographs of the documents.
Her anger was quieter now.
More dangerous.
Rachel watched from across the table.
“What happens if they prove she forged your name?”
“Consequences.”
“You sound like Andrew.”
Claire almost smiled.
Then Noah entered holding a drawing.
It showed three stick figures.
Claire.
Noah.
Daniel.
Margaret was not there.
Noah handed it to Claire.
“That’s our new house.”
Claire looked at the drawing.
Daniel’s figure stood outside.
“Why is Daddy outside?”
Noah shrugged.
“He has to ask before he comes in.”
Claire swallowed.
Children understood boundaries more naturally than adults.
The temporary custody hearing arrived Monday morning.
Claire entered the courthouse with Andrew.
Daniel sat across the hallway with his attorney.
Margaret was not there.
That surprised Claire.
Daniel approached slowly.
“I told her not to come.”
Claire said nothing.
“I also gave my attorney permission to stipulate to supervised visits for now.”
Claire looked at him.
“You agreed?”
“I watched the recording.”
His eyes were red.
“I watched it three times.”
Claire’s expression remained guarded.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I kept looking for a version where I wasn’t the man I remembered being.”
He swallowed.
“There wasn’t one.”
For one brief second, Claire saw the man she had married.
Then she remembered Noah’s swollen lips.
Love could explain history.
It could not erase danger.
The courtroom doors opened.
Andrew touched Claire’s arm.
“It’s time.”
Claire walked inside.
Behind her, Daniel remained still.
May you like
He had spent years thinking Claire’s silence meant dependence.
Now every quiet step she took was leading her farther beyond his control.
