Chapter 11 - The Price of Silence.
Robert asked to meet Lucas without attorneys, detectives, or company staff.
Lucas refused until Victoria said she wanted to hear what Robert was finally willing to admit.
The meeting took place in a private conference room at the hospital after one of Victoria's follow-up monitoring appointments.
Reyes knew about it and waited nearby with Victoria's consent.
Robert arrived carrying no briefcase.
For a man who treated paper like armor, that alone made him look exposed.
He sat across from Lucas and Victoria and folded his hands.
"I hired Northstar," he said.
Lucas felt anger move through him, but he stayed seated.
"For what?"
Robert said Northstar had originally been retained five years earlier to investigate leaks, employee theft, and threats against major Hale projects.
Mason had recommended the company.
Martin handled the operational work.
At first, Robert believed the invoices represented legitimate security services.
Later, he learned that some payments were being routed through shell entities.
"And you kept paying them?" Victoria asked.
Robert looked at her.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because by then they knew enough to damage the company."
Lucas heard the word company and almost laughed.
"You mean blackmail."
Robert did not reject the word.
He admitted Mason had used private information gathered through Northstar to pressure him during a board dispute two years earlier.
Robert paid rather than expose the company to scandal.
One payment became another.
One compromise became a habit.
The system survived because everyone involved feared what disclosure would cost.
"Where does my wife fit into this?" Lucas asked.
Robert's eyes dropped.
When Victoria became pregnant, the trust's voting-share clause triggered a succession review.
Eleanor worried Lucas would soon control enough shares to challenge Robert's leadership.
Robert claimed he did not share her fear.
Victoria interrupted.
"But you let Mason investigate me."
Robert admitted he authorized a background review after Eleanor raised questions about the fertility treatment.
He said the instruction was limited to public records and financial exposure.
"You investigated the mother of your grandchild because you were worried about votes," Lucas said.
Robert looked older than he had a week earlier.
"I told myself I was protecting the company."
"You were protecting control."
The distinction silenced him.
Robert then admitted something worse.
He knew Amber was in serious financial trouble.
Eleanor had asked Mason to help restructure Amber's debts.
Robert approved a private advance from a family account but later discovered the paperwork had been changed to make the money look like it came from Lucas and Victoria.
"When did you discover that?"
"The morning of the assault."
Lucas stood.
"You knew before I did."
"Yes."
"And you still did not call me."
Robert's voice finally broke its familiar calm.
"I was trying to determine whether Mason was setting up Amber or Victoria."
"While Amber was at my house."
Robert closed his eyes.
"I did not know she was there."
Victoria studied him.
"Did Eleanor?"
Robert opened his eyes again.
"I don't know."
Lucas did not believe ignorance could carry a family this far.
He demanded the truth about the security login.
Robert admitted Eleanor knew his office credentials.
She had used them before for trust documents.
However, he believed Martin had cloned access long before the assault.
That explanation fit the badge evidence and the missing security devices.
Then Robert said he had one more thing to confess.
Three days before the attack, Mason came to his office with the cropped photograph of Victoria and Dr. Nolan.
Mason suggested the baby might not be Lucas's.
Robert said he rejected the claim.
"Did you tell him to stop?" Victoria asked.
Robert hesitated.
"I told him to verify facts before making accusations."
Victoria's face turned cold.
"So you gave him permission to keep digging."
Robert looked at her and did not answer.
Lucas realized that his father had spent his life hiding moral choices behind professional language.
Investigate meant intrude.
Contain meant threaten.
Protect meant control.
He had never needed to say hurt her for damage to follow.
Reyes entered after Robert left and asked whether either of them wanted the statement documented formally.
Victoria said yes before Lucas could answer.
"Every word."
That afternoon, police found a rented storage unit paid through Northstar.
The unit had been discovered by tracing the service-station receipt found in Mason's office to a nearby storage facility.
A search warrant was executed before sunset.
Inside were computer parts, cloned access badges, company files, and three sealed evidence bags that had never belonged to any lawful investigation.
One bag contained Victoria's real black smartphone.
Its screen was cracked.
Its case was missing.
The device still powered on.
The battery icon appeared first.
Then the lock screen.
Then a notification showing one unsent audio file waiting to synchronize.
Reyes called Lucas from the storage facility.
"We found it."
Lucas looked across the apartment at Victoria.
"Is the recording there?"
