Chapter 7 - The Envelope of Lies.
Mason Vale answered the detective's first call but declined an interview without his own attorney present.
That reaction was legal, rational, and deeply unsatisfying to Lucas.
Reyes reminded him that refusing an interview did not prove guilt.
Lucas reminded her that innocent people rarely parked outside assault scenes while their clients carried envelopes full of fabricated evidence.
Reyes gave him a look that told him anger was not a substitute for evidence.
Victoria was discharged that afternoon with strict instructions for rest, monitoring, and immediate return if contractions, bleeding, dizziness, or reduced fetal movement appeared.
Lucas took her to a small furnished apartment owned by one of his college friends rather than returning to the house.
Only Reyes, the friend, and Victoria's parents knew the location.
Lucas did not tell Eleanor or Robert.
The decision felt like the first real boundary he had ever placed around his marriage.
Victoria slept for nearly four hours.
When she woke, Lucas had spread copies of the cream-envelope documents across the dining table.
Police had recovered the originals from Amber's car after obtaining consent through her attorney.
The packet contained bank statements, internal Hale Development reports, the cropped photograph, and printed text messages that appeared to show Victoria threatening Amber.
Most were false.
One document was real.
It was a page from the Hale family trust.
A paragraph had been highlighted in yellow.
It stated that a beneficiary's direct biological descendant could receive voting shares at birth if parentage was documented to the trustees' satisfaction.
Someone had written in the margin.
If the baby is not Lucas's, Victoria gets nothing.
Victoria sat down slowly.
"That handwriting isn't Amber's."
Lucas knew it was not his parents' handwriting either.
He took a photograph and sent it to Reyes.
Then he called Robert.
His father answered on the first ring.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere Victoria feels safe."
Robert went quiet.
"That is not an answer."
"It is the only one you're getting."
Lucas asked whether Mason Vale had been working on the trust recently.
Robert admitted Mason had reviewed succession issues at Eleanor's request.
"Why?"
"Because your child will change voting control."
Lucas felt a cold pressure behind his eyes.
He had not thought of the baby as a corporate event.
Apparently everyone else had.
If Lucas's child received the shares, his branch of the family would hold a controlling bloc that could limit Robert's authority.
If the child were declared ineligible, control remained divided among Robert, Eleanor, and Amber.
"Did you know Mason contacted Victoria's doctor?"
Robert denied it.
"Did you know he was parked outside my house?"
This time the silence was longer.
"I know nothing about that."
Lucas believed the words less than he wanted to.
After the call, Victoria studied the highlighted clause again.
"Amber benefits if our baby is excluded."
"Yes."
"So does your mother."
Lucas did not answer.
Victoria was too tired to enjoy being right.
At six that evening, Reyes arrived with an update.
The black sedan from the doorbell footage was indeed Mason's Audi.
A traffic camera captured the dent near the rear wheel clearly enough to match photographs taken by investigators that afternoon.
Mason had claimed he was at a courthouse across town during the assault.
Parking records contradicted him.
Reyes had not arrested him because being near the scene was not itself a crime.
However, police had obtained a warrant for his office electronic records related to Victoria.
They had also taken Amber's phone for a full forensic examination.
One deleted message had already been recovered.
It was sent by Mason at 9:54 the morning of the attack.
Show her the proof and make her admit it.
Amber replied.
What if she refuses?
Mason wrote back.
Do not leave until she breaks.
Victoria stared at the message.
"He sent her there."
Reyes remained careful.
"He encouraged a confrontation."
"He knew she was unstable," Lucas said.
Reyes asked how they knew that.
Lucas told her about Amber's recent behavior.
She had been missing work, calling relatives late at night, accusing people of taking sides against her, and becoming obsessed with the idea that Victoria had replaced her in the family.
Amber had also borrowed money from several relatives and lied about why she needed it.
Victoria looked at the bank transfer.
"Maybe someone promised to erase her debts."
That possibility connected motive to manipulation in a way none of them liked.
Reyes said investigators were tracing Amber's new account.
The seventy-eight thousand dollars had not stayed there.
Within two hours of arriving, sixty thousand had moved again.
The destination was a corporate consulting company called Northstar Advisory LLC.
Lucas recognized the name.
Northstar had billed Hale Development for years.
He had never met anyone who worked there.
Reyes placed another document on the table.
Northstar's registered agent was a law office associated with Mason Vale.
The money had traveled from Lucas and Victoria to Amber and then into a company connected to the man who sent Amber to confront Victoria.
The pattern looked almost too obvious.
"Why would a smart attorney leave a trail like that?" Victoria asked.
Reyes gave the question the respect it deserved.
"Maybe because the trail was supposed to make someone else look guilty."
Lucas looked down at the forged records.
The entire packet had been built to make Victoria look dishonest.
What if the bank transfer had been built to make Amber look dishonest too?
His phone rang from an unknown number.
Reyes motioned for him to answer on speaker.
Amber's voice came through, breathless and frightened.
"Luke, don't hang up."
Lucas gripped the edge of the table.
"You are violating the no-contact order."
"I know."
"Then why are you calling?"
Amber began to cry, but the sound was restrained rather than theatrical.
"Because Mason told me you were going to destroy me."
Reyes silently started recording.

"He said Mom wanted Victoria gone before the baby was born."
