Chapter 8 - The Man in the Photograph.

Lucas said nothing for several seconds after Amber accused Eleanor.
Reyes pointed toward the phone and mouthed one word.
Keep her talking.
Lucas forced his voice to remain level.
"What exactly did Mason tell you?"
Amber inhaled shakily.
She said Mason had contacted her three weeks earlier and claimed Victoria was secretly preparing to challenge the family trust.
He told Amber that Victoria had manipulated Lucas, stolen company funds, and arranged the pregnancy to secure control of Hale Development.
The claims sounded absurd when spoken together.
Amber admitted they had not sounded absurd to her at the time.
"I was angry already," she said.
"At what?"
"Everything."
She had lost money in a failed side business, fallen behind on rent, and believed Robert planned to remove her from an executive role.
Mason had known each pressure point.
He offered proof in pieces.
A bank statement one day.
A photograph another day.
A fake message the next.
Each document made the previous lie feel more believable.
"Did Mom tell you to go to our house?" Lucas asked.
Amber hesitated.
"Not directly."
"That is not an answer."
"She said Victoria needed to understand consequences."
Lucas closed his eyes.
He could hear Eleanor saying those exact words.
Amber continued.
Mason had driven her to a coffee shop near Lucas's neighborhood that morning and given her the cream envelope.
He told her to confront Victoria and make her confess that the baby was not Lucas's.
"Did he tell you to hurt her?"
"No."
The answer came quickly.
"No one told me to kick her."
For the first time, Amber did not blame Victoria.
"I did that."
The admission did not erase the damage, but Lucas heard something in her voice that had been missing at the house.
Responsibility.
Then Amber added, "But he wanted me furious when I walked in."
Reyes signaled for Lucas to ask about the bank transfer.
Amber claimed she had not opened the account that received the seventy-eight thousand dollars.
She had signed online documents Mason sent because he said they were related to refinancing personal debt.
"You signed without reading them?" Lucas asked.
"I was desperate."
Lucas almost shouted at her.
He remembered Victoria on the floor and stopped himself.
Amber said she had only learned about the transfer after her attorney showed her the bank records.
She had never heard of Northstar Advisory.
"Then why did you text me to check my account?"
Amber went silent.
Lucas repeated the question.
"Because Mason told me the money proved Victoria was lying."
The logic was twisted enough to fit the rest of the story.
Reyes ended the call after instructing Amber to contact her attorney and arrange a formal interview immediately.
Once the line disconnected, Lucas looked at the detective.
"Do you believe her?"
"Parts of it are testable."
Reyes trusted verification more than instinct.
Within hours, investigators found support for one major claim.
Cafe security footage showed Mason and Amber meeting that morning.
He handed her the cream envelope.
Later footage showed him leaving alone in the black Audi.
The same Audi appeared near Lucas's house.
The next day, Dr. Nolan met with Reyes and Lucas at the clinic with Victoria's permission.
He was a soft-spoken physician in his forties who looked uncomfortable being dragged into a family war.
He explained that the photograph outside the clinic had been taken after a routine records consultation.
He had touched Victoria's arm because she had become dizzy on the sidewalk.
The cropped image removed the clinic sign, the nurse standing two feet away, and Lucas's name on the folder Dr. Nolan carried.
"Who had access to the original security footage outside your building?" Reyes asked.
Dr. Nolan said the exterior camera belonged to the property-management company.
Police had already requested logs.
The property company responded before the meeting ended.
A copy of the footage had been downloaded seventeen days earlier by a temporary security consultant.
The consultant's authorization came through a subcontractor.
The subcontractor was Northstar Advisory.
Lucas felt the same name closing around every piece of evidence.
Reyes asked Dr. Nolan about the attempted record request.
The signature was forged, and the request sought unusually specific information about embryo origin and genetic documentation.
"Would those records prove the baby is biologically Lucas's?"
Dr. Nolan answered carefully.
The records would document that the embryo was created from gametes collected from Lucas and Victoria, subject to normal medical verification.
Someone had been searching for a vulnerability that did not exist.
After the interview, Lucas and Victoria sat in the clinic parking lot without starting the car.
Victoria rested both hands over her stomach.
"I used to think your family just disliked me."
Lucas looked at the dashboard.
"I used to think dislike was the worst thing they would do."
His phone rang.
Robert.
Lucas answered.
His father's voice sounded different.
Not calm.
Not controlled.
Afraid.
"Where is your mother?"
Lucas looked at Victoria.
"I thought she was with you."
"She left the office two hours ago."
"So?"
Robert took a breath.
"Police served a warrant on Mason's office this morning."
"I know."
"They found a file with your mother's signature authorizing Northstar payments."
Lucas felt Victoria turn toward him.
Robert continued.
"Eleanor is not answering her phone."
May you like
Then he said the words that made Lucas start the car.
"And the safe at the lake house has been opened."
