Chapter 12 - The Recording.

The forensic lab copied Victoria's phone before anyone listened to the files.

Reyes refused to risk altering metadata by opening the recordings directly on the device.

Lucas understood the caution and hated every minute it required.

The first recovered recording was the one Victoria had intentionally started when Amber refused to leave.

It lasted fourteen minutes and nine seconds.

The second recording was shorter and stranger.

It had been created automatically by a voice-assistant feature after the phone detected a phrase that sounded like its wake command.

That file captured audio from several minutes before Victoria deliberately began recording.

Together, the files reconstructed almost the entire confrontation.

Reyes invited Lucas and Victoria to listen at the station in a private interview room.

Victoria almost declined.

Then she straightened in her chair.

"I need to hear what actually happened, not what everyone says happened."

The first file began with the front door closing.

Amber's voice sounded controlled at first.

"We need to talk."

Victoria answered, "Not if you're going to shout."

Paper slid across a surface.

Amber accused her of stealing from Hale Development, draining company accounts, and using the pregnancy to take control of the trust.

Victoria denied each accusation.

She recognized some documents as altered and told Amber to call Lucas.

Amber refused.

"Mason said Luke is too blind to see what you are."

Then a phone rang.

Amber answered on speaker.

Mason's voice was clearer than the surviving cloud fragment had suggested.

"Has she admitted the transfer?"

Victoria demanded to know why Mason was involved.

He ignored her.

"Amber, stay focused."

Amber asked about the photograph.

Mason told her to show it.

Victoria laughed once in disbelief.

"That is my doctor."

Mason said, "Then she can explain why she hid him."

Victoria replied, "I hid nothing from my husband."

Lucas closed his eyes when he heard that sentence.

She had been defending their marriage while someone outside the room tried to dismantle it.

The recording grew more tense.

Victoria repeatedly told Amber to leave.

Amber repeatedly refused.

At one point Victoria said, "You are scaring me."

Amber answered, "Good."

The word made Lucas grip the chair.

Then came a quieter portion.

Amber moved away from Victoria and spoke into the phone.

"She isn't breaking."

Mason responded, "Then remind her what Eleanor said."

Amber returned to Victoria.

"Mom says there will be consequences if you force this family into a public fight."

Victoria asked, "Did Eleanor send you?"

Amber did not answer directly.

Instead she said, "She wants this fixed before the baby is born."

The sentence hung in the interview room long after the recording continued.

Victoria's face had gone pale.

Reyes paused the audio.

"Do you want to stop?"

"No."

They continued.

Victoria told Amber she was calling police.

Movement followed.

Amber apparently reached for the phone.

Victoria said, "Do not touch me."

Amber shouted that Victoria had ruined everything.

Then came the sound of a struggle over the device.

Victoria said, "Get out."

Amber screamed, "You deserved this."

A heavy impact followed.

Victoria gasped.

Another sound suggested her body striking the carpet or furniture.

Lucas felt nausea rise but forced himself to remain still.

The recording did not show what happened, but the audio was unmistakable.

There was no preceding attack by Victoria.

No threat from Victoria.

No justification for Amber's violence.

Then the recording captured the hallway door opening.

Lucas's voice called Victoria's name.

The remainder matched his memory too closely.

His panic.

Amber's excuses.

His own slap.

The emergency call.

There was no version of the story where he escaped accountability for that moment either.

When the recording ended, Victoria stared at the table.

"Play the earlier file."

Reyes did.

The automatic recording began before Amber entered the main room.

The audio was muffled because Victoria's phone rested near the fireplace.

A voice came from the entryway.

Amber.

"I'm inside."

Mason answered through her phone.

"Good."

Then another voice joined the call.

Female.

Older.

Familiar.

Lucas knew it before the lab report could confirm it.

Eleanor.

"Do not let her twist this," Eleanor said.

Amber asked, "What do you want me to make her do?"

Eleanor responded, "I want her to understand she cannot take this family from us."

Mason interrupted.

"Get the admission first."

Eleanor added one final sentence.

"Make her understand there is a price for forcing our hand."

The call ended.

Thirty seconds later, Amber entered the living room.

Lucas looked at Reyes.

"My mother sent her."

Reyes chose her words carefully.

"Your mother encouraged the confrontation."

Victoria's eyes remained fixed on the audio waveform.

"She knew Amber was angry."

"That will matter," Reyes said.

The distinction between ordering violence and knowingly creating a dangerous confrontation would have to be examined by prosecutors.

Lucas had no patience left for technical distinctions, but he understood the law required them.

Before they left, Reyes told them the lab found one final item on Victoria's phone.

A photo taken accidentally during the struggle had captured part of Amber's cream envelope and the reflection of someone outside the front window.

The reflected figure stood near the black sedan.

Facial detail was poor.

However, the person wore a distinctive silver watch.

May you like

Lucas had seen that watch every week for twelve years.

Martin Voss wore it in every executive meeting.
