Chapter 1: The Sound of Tearing Paper

Chapter 1: The Sound of Tearing Paper

The freezing winter wind howled against the grand estate, rattling the heavy windowpanes, but inside the luxurious bridal suite hallway, time seemed to stop entirely. Liam held his eight-year-old daughter, Lily, whose small frame shook violently beneath his oversized white dinner jacket. Her lips were a terrifying shade of blue, her teeth chattering so hard he could feel the vibration against his own chest.

Vanessa stood just a few feet away, her custom silk gown shimmering under the chandelier light. She hadn't even dropped her crystal nail file. Her eyes, usually so carefully calculated to project warmth and grace, were flat and annoyed. She leaned in, entirely unbothered by the fact that Liam was standing right there, and whispered the threat that would forever echo in his mind.

"If you ever embarrass me like this again, you little brat," Vanessa hissed, her voice dripping with venom, "I will send you to a boarding school so far away your daddy will forget you even exist. Now stop crying and pretend you locked yourself out."

She didn't realize Liam had superhuman hearing when it came to his child. The blood drained from his face, replaced instantly by a scorching, blinding rage. Every red flag, every subtle dismissal of his daughter over the past two years, suddenly clicked into horrifying focus.

"What did you just say to her?" Liam’s voice was dangerously low. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly—heavy, suffocating, and thick with tension. The few bridesmaids hovering near the door froze, their champagne flutes trembling.

Vanessa blinked, quickly arranging her features into her signature innocent pout. "Liam, darling, she’s just throwing a tantrum. I was just trying to—"

"You locked my daughter on a freezing balcony," Liam interrupted, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "You left her out there to freeze because she was a distraction."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out the thick, cream-colored parchment paper containing his wedding vows. He had spent weeks writing them, pouring his soul into promises of forever. He looked Vanessa dead in the eye, his gaze colder than the ice outside. With slow, deliberate movements, he ripped the thick paper in half. The sharp sound echoed like a gunshot. He ripped it again, and again, letting the shredded pieces fall like snow over Vanessa’s perfect, expensive shoes.

"The wedding is off," Liam said. He scooped Lily up into his arms, burying her freezing face in his neck, and turned his back on the woman he almost made the biggest mistake of his life with.
