Chapter 10 - CheckmateThe sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as the NYPD approached the estate.

Thomas collapsed into a leather armchair by the window, staring blankly at the floor. The arrogance that had fueled him for years had evaporated, leaving behind an empty shell of a man facing the rest of his life in a federal prison.
Liam lowered his weapon, clicking the safety back on and slipping it beneath his jacket. He walked over to Nurse Wilkins, who was sobbing quietly in the corner.
"Where is the counter-agent to the barbiturates?" Liam demanded, his voice devoid of sympathy.
Shaking, the nurse opened a locked cabinet and handed Liam a small vial. I took it, immediately calling for the facility's on-call physician, who had been locked out of the wing by Thomas's guards.
Within thirty minutes, the police had swarmed the room. They placed Thomas in handcuffs, reading him his rights as he was hauled away without a word of protest. Nurse Wilkins followed, her head bowed in shame.
The facility doctor administered the counter-agent, and slowly, agonizingly, the color began to return to my grandfather's face.
Liam stood by the door, watching as I sat by the edge of the bed.
"Elena?" a raspy, incredibly weak voice whispered.
I gasped, looking down. Arthur Sterling’s eyes were open. They were cloudy, but the sharp intelligence that had built an empire was fighting its way back to the surface.
"I'm here, Grandpa," I said, tears finally spilling over my cheeks. "I'm right here. You're safe."
Arthur managed a faint, crooked smile. "Did you... did you read the books, El?"
I let out a wet laugh. "I read the books, Grandpa. You were right. People lie. The numbers don't."
Arthur closed his eyes, a peaceful sigh escaping his lips. "Good girl. Knew you had... the fire." He drifted back into a natural, healing sleep.
I sat there for a long time, the adrenaline finally leaving my system, replaced by a profound exhaustion. The empire was safe. The rot had been cut out.
I felt a heavy, warm coat drape over my shoulders. I looked up to see Liam standing beside me.
"It's over," he said softly.
"Not quite," I replied, standing up and facing him. "There's still the matter of a hostile takeover from Thorne Capital."
Liam actually laughed—a genuine, warm sound that completely transformed his face. "I think Thorne Capital just found a partner, not a target. Keep your properties, Elena. But next time you're in Aspen, allow me to buy you dinner. No spilled wine, I promise."
I looked at the ruthless billionaire who had helped me save my family's legacy. He was dangerous, opportunistic, and entirely unpredictable.

"I look forward to it, Mr. Thorne," I said, a genuine smile touching my lips.
As I looked out the window at the morning sun rising over the city, I knew my grandfather's empire was finally mine to lead. And God help anyone who tried to take it from me again.
