Chapter 7 - The Poisoned NeedleThe sterile, blinding white lights of the private helipad stung my eyes. The roar of the medevac chopper faded into the distance, carrying a critically injured Julian Vance toward a secure trauma center in Denver. Liam’s private security detail flanked us.

"He's safe for now," Liam said, handing me a heavy wool coat he had commandeered from the coat check. "But Thomas has a head start. We need to look at that flash drive."

We bypassed the lobby, where the gala was now descending into whispered chaos, and took the service elevator straight to my suite.

Once the heavy oak door locked behind us, I practically ran to my laptop, my fingers flying across the keyboard. Liam tossed the black flash drive onto the desk.

"Thomas said my grandfather is dying," I said, my voice trembling for the first time. "He said the board wouldn't follow me. Liam, Arthur’s heart condition is managed. It’s stable."

"Let's see what the drive says," Liam replied gently, pulling up a chair beside me.

I plugged in the drive. It bypassed the standard encryption, opening a labyrinth of folders. Liam was right. It was a treasure trove of damning evidence. There were wire transfers to offshore accounts, emails detailing the artificial devaluation of the lodge, and finally, a folder labeled A.S. Medical Proxy.

I clicked it open.

My stomach plummeted. There were scanned copies of Arthur’s blood work over the last three months. But next to them were internal memos from Thomas to a Dr. Aris Thorne—no relation to Liam—outlining a "modified treatment plan."

"Look at the medication list," Liam pointed to the screen, his jaw set in a tight line. "They haven't been giving him his heart medication. They've been dosing him with a heavy barbiturate cocktail. It mimics the symptoms of rapid cognitive decline. Thomas isn't just waiting for your grandfather to die. He's chemically inducing dementia to trigger the medical incompetence clause in the trust."

"Oh my god," I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "He’s been in a private care facility in New York for six weeks. Thomas insisted on handling his security."

"Who is the head nurse?" Liam asked urgently.

"Nurse Wilkins," I replied, a wave of nausea hitting me. "She’s been with the family for years."

"Then she’s the one who signed the fake affidavit," Liam concluded. "Elena, it’s 1:00 AM. If Thomas knows we have the recording, he knows he’s finished here. His only play is to fly to New York, force Arthur to sign the transfer of power while he's drugged, and disappear with the company assets."

I slammed the laptop shut. The sadness vanished, replaced by an inferno of pure, white-hot rage. My grandfather was the only parent I had ever known. He had raised me, taught me, and loved me.

"We need a jet," I said, turning to Liam. "Now."

Liam smiled, a dangerous, predatory curve of his lips. "I have a Gulfstream fueled and waiting on the Aspen tarmac. Let's go hunt your uncle."
