Chapter 11 - The FalloutThe media storm hit before the sun had fully risen over Manhattan.

By 9:00 AM, the financial news networks were running loop coverage of police cruisers outside the Sterling Private Care Facility. Wall Street Journal push notifications lit up every phone in the Sterling Hospitality executive boardroom. The headlines were ruthless: STERLING HEIR ARRESTED IN SHOCKING COUP ATTEMPT.
I stood at the head of the long mahogany conference table, overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The twelve members of the Board of Directors sat before me, a mix of seasoned billionaires, real estate tycoons, and hospitality veterans. Some looked shell-shocked; others looked calculating, wondering how to profit from the chaos.
"Let's get one thing straight," I said, my voice slicing through the nervous murmurs. I placed both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning forward. "Sterling Hospitality is not bleeding. The rot has been excised. Thomas Sterling is currently sitting in a federal holding cell without bail, and Julian Vance is recovering under police supervision in Denver."
Richard Hayes, the silver-haired Chairman of the Board, adjusted his glasses. "Elena, the optics of this are a nightmare. The stock is already down four percent in pre-market trading. The investors are spooked. An internal family war—"
"It is not a war, Richard," I interrupted smoothly. "A war implies two sides had a fighting chance. Thomas tried to steal my grandfather's legacy, and I crushed him in under twelve hours. If the investors are spooked, it’s because they don't yet understand that the Sterling empire is finally being run by someone who actually reads the balance sheets."
I tapped a button on the remote in my hand, and the massive screen behind me lit up.
"I have already frozen Thomas’s offshore accounts," I continued, pacing slowly behind my chair. "We are reclaiming the eight million dollars he funneled out of the Aspen property. Furthermore, Arthur Sterling is awake, stable, and recovering. He has signed a full, legally binding transfer of executive power to me, witnessed by federal authorities."
The room fell silent. They knew checkmate when they saw it.
"What about Thorne Capital?" asked a board member from the Chicago division. "Rumor has it Liam Thorne was in Aspen. Was he involved in this?"
I kept my expression neutral, though a phantom chill of the Aspen wind brushed my memory. "Mr. Thorne was instrumental in uncovering the fraud. We are no longer a target for a hostile takeover. Instead, we are entering preliminary talks for a strategic partnership on our European properties."
Richard let out a slow breath, nodding in begrudging respect. "You handled this... ruthlessly, Elena."
"I handled it like a Sterling," I corrected him. "Now, issue a press release. Assure the market that the transition of power is stable. I want every regional manager on a conference call by noon. We are auditing every single property Thomas had a hand in."
As the board members filed out, murmuring their newly found allegiances, my assistant, Sarah, rushed into the room. She looked pale.
"Ms. Sterling," she said, clutching a tablet. "The Aspen police just called. They searched Thomas’s private office at the lodge. They found something you need to see. And... Liam Thorne is waiting for you in your office."
I grabbed the tablet. On the screen was a scanned copy of a promissory note found in Thomas’s safe. It wasn't a bank loan. It was a private debt agreement.

Thomas hadn't just been stealing to buy out the company. He had been stealing to pay off a fifty-million-dollar debt. And the name signed at the bottom of the ledger made my blood run cold.
Viktor Volkov.
