Chapter 1: The Burn Notice

Chapter 1: The Burn Notice
The cold steel of the Glock rested heavily against Julian’s temple. Elena didn't flinch. Her breathing was perfectly controlled, a stark contrast to the rapid rise and fall of Julian’s chest. The romantic facade of the Manhattan penthouse—the scattered rose petals, the soft jazz playing in the background, her elegant white evening gown—felt like a distant memory now.
"Mission accomplished," she repeated into her hidden earpiece, waiting for her handler’s confirmation. "The Agency sends its regards."
Julian, despite being pinned to the marble floor, let out a dark, breathless chuckle. "You really think they’re listening, sweetheart?"
Elena pressed the barrel harder into his skin. "Quiet."
"Check your comms," Julian sneered, his eyes darting toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Empire State Building. "Director Sterling didn't send you here just to kill me. He sent you here to tie up loose ends. Both of us."

Elena tapped her earpiece. Static. A cold knot formed in her stomach. She was a Tier One operative; comms never went down unless they were jammed. Suddenly, a trio of faint, red laser sights danced across the far wall, tracking rapidly toward her white dress.
Her instincts kicked in. She rolled off Julian just as a hail of suppressed sniper fire shattered the reinforced glass.
