Chapter 2: Shattered Glass

The penthouse erupted into chaos. High-caliber rounds chewed through the expensive leather furniture and marble pillars. The freezing New York wind howled through the shattered windows, whipping Elena’s hair across her face.

She scrambled behind a heavy mahogany bar, tearing the restrictive slit of her white dress higher up her thigh to allow for full mobility. Julian dove in beside her, clutching a bleeding graze on his shoulder.

"See?" Julian panted over the sound of gunfire. "I have a decrypted drive with Sterling's offshore accounts. He’s selling Agency secrets to the highest bidder. I was the buyer. You were the executioner. Now, we're both liabilities."

Elena popped the magazine out of her Glock, checked the chamber, and slammed it back in. She had eight rounds left. "Do you have an exfil plan, or did you just come here to look handsome and die?"

"Service elevator," Julian said, nodding toward the back corridor. "I rigged it to bypass the lockdown."

"Move," Elena ordered.

Covering him, she leaned around the bar, squeezing off two precise shots that took down the first tactical entry team breaching the front door. They sprinted down the hallway, the once-pristine white dress now stained with soot and adrenaline fueling their every step.
