Chapter 5: Severance Package

"Elena," Sterling stammered, holding his hands up. "We can work this out. Whatever he told you, it’s a lie. You are a patriot. Put the gun down."

Elena slowly walked into the room, kicking Sterling's personal sidearm away from his desk. "A patriot?" she echoed softly. "You sold out our operatives in Berlin. You burned the Cairo safehouse. And you tried to put a bullet in my back."

"I can give you millions," Sterling pleaded, sweat beading on his forehead. "Untraceable accounts. A new identity. Just hand over the drive."

Julian walked through the shattered doorway, holding up his tablet. "Too late, Director. I just broadcasted the contents of the drive to every major intelligence agency from Langley to MI6. Your shadow ring is dead. And so are your accounts."

Sterling’s face fell. He lunged for a secondary weapon hidden under his desk drawer.

Elena didn't hesitate. She fired a single, deafening shot. Sterling collapsed back into his leather chair, motionless.

The sirens of the NYPD and federal tactical teams were already wailing in the distance, echoing through the empty canyons of Wall Street. Elena turned to Julian, lowering her weapon.

"The Agency is going to be ripped apart from the inside," Julian said, pocketing his tablet. "You're a ghost now. What's your next move?"

Elena holstered her gun and looked out the window at the sprawling, sleeping city. For the first time in ten years, she wasn't waiting for orders. She was completely free.

"I think," Elena said, a faint smile touching her lips, "I’m going to take a vacation."

Without another word, they slipped out through the fire escape, vanishing into the shadows of the city before the authorities even reached the lobby.
