They spent the next three hours laying low in a subterranean utility room beneath the subway tunnels of lower Manhattan. The temporary truce was uneasy, forged solely by the mutual desire to stay breathing.
Julian pulled a sleek, heavily encrypted flash drive from his jacket pocket. He tossed it to Elena.
"Everything is on there," Julian explained, wrapping his wounded shoulder with a torn strip of his expensive black shirt. "Project Blackout. Sterling has been running a shadow ring within the Agency for five years. If we die, he gets away with it. And he will keep hunting us until we are in the ground."
Elena plugged the drive into her secure field tablet, bypassing the Agency firewalls. Lines of code and banking transactions flooded the screen. Julian was telling the truth. The man who had trained her, the man who ordered her to pull the trigger tonight, was a traitor.

She closed the tablet and looked at Julian. The cold, detached assassin in her was gone, replaced by something much more dangerous: a burned operative out for revenge.
"Sterling operates out of the shell corporation building in the Financial District," Elena said, her voice like ice. "We aren't going to run. We are going to bleed him dry."
