Chapter 8: The Desperate Deal

Running desperately out of cash, allies, and options, Preston arranged a clandestine meeting in a dimly lit, subterranean parking garage with a notorious loan shark known only in whispers as Victor.

Preston wore a cheap, unpressed coat, a pathetic shadow of his former self. He needed immediate capital to retain a high-powered criminal defense attorney who could somehow punch holes in the mounting mountain of evidence against him.

"I need half a million, Victor," Preston pleaded, his hands shaking as he lit a cigarette. "I'm about to launch a countersuit against Hayes Global. You'll get a tenfold return."

Victor laughed, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the concrete pillars. He knew everything about Preston's frozen assets. "Collateral, Sterling. What do you have left that isn't already seized by the feds?"

Preston hesitated for only a second before unzipping a worn leather satchel. He pulled out a secure flash drive containing classified, proprietary tech designs he had secretly downloaded from Hayes Global's R&D servers before being locked out. It was blatant corporate espionage—a desperate, felony-level gamble to buy his freedom.
