Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Emma’s heart stopped for a moment.

Not because Isabella had found them.

Not because of the threat in her voice.

But because of the way she looked at the darkness where Emma was hiding.

She wasn’t guessing.

She wasn’t searching.

She knew.

Emma slowly tightened her grip around Ethan’s hand.

The boy’s fingers were cold.

Shaking.

Terrified.

For five days, he had been trapped in this hidden room beneath his own home.

Five days of silence.

Five days of fear.

And now the woman who had placed him there was standing only a few feet away, wearing the same expensive gown she had worn while smiling beside his father in front of hundreds of guests.

The same woman everyone believed was perfect.

The same woman the newspapers called “the new beginning of the Sterling family.”

But Emma was seeing the truth.

The smile was a mask.

The kindness was an act.

And behind the beautiful mansion walls was a nightmare nobody knew existed.

Isabella slowly walked toward the center of the room.

Her heels clicked against the stone floor.

Each sound felt like a countdown.

“I know you’re here, Emma.”

The words sent a chill down her spine.

Ethan looked up at her.

“She knows everything,” he whispered.

Emma glanced at him.

“What do you mean?”

Ethan swallowed.

“She knows what everyone does.”

A cold feeling moved through Emma’s chest.

“What did she do to you?”

The boy looked away.

“She said I was making things difficult.”

Emma felt anger rising.

“Difficult?”

“She said my dad loved her now. She said I needed to stop acting like my mom was still here.”

Emma’s expression changed.

William Sterling’s late wife, Victoria.

Everyone in the mansion avoided talking about her.

Including William.

Especially William.

Victoria had died two years earlier in what the media described as a tragic car accident.

After that, William had become a different person.

More distant.

More focused on business.

More willing to accept whatever made life easier.

Including Isabella.

But Ethan had never accepted it.

He still kept his mother’s photographs.

Still talked about her.

Still believed she would somehow walk through the front doors one day.

Emma had always thought it was because he was a child struggling with grief.

Now she wondered…

What if Ethan had known something everyone else ignored?

“What else did she tell you?” Emma whispered.

Before Ethan could answer, Isabella spoke again.

“You always were different from the others, Emma.”

Emma froze.

The woman’s voice carried through the room.

“You never looked at the house the way the other employees did.”

Isabella walked toward an old wooden table.

“You noticed things.”

She picked up a glass of water sitting there.

“You noticed when Ethan stopped eating.”

A pause.

“You noticed when he stopped sleeping.”

Another pause.

“You noticed when he started asking questions about his mother’s death.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

So that was it.

Isabella wasn’t afraid of Ethan.

She was afraid of what Ethan knew.

“You were watching him,” Emma said.

Isabella smiled slightly.

“No.”

She placed the glass down.

“I was protecting my future.”

Emma felt disgust.

“By locking a nine-year-old child in a basement?”

Isabella’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Then explain.”

For the first time, Isabella’s calm expression cracked.

Only slightly.

But Emma saw it.

A flash of anger.

Fear.

Something deeper.

“You think this is about a child?”

Isabella stepped closer.

“You think everything is simple because you wear gloves and clean rooms while listening to rich people complain about their problems?”

Her voice became sharper.

“You have no idea what happens behind these walls.”

Emma didn’t move.

“Then tell me.”

Silence.

The two women stared at each other.

One wearing designer silk.

The other wearing a simple housekeeper’s uniform.

But in that moment, they were equals.

Because Emma had something Isabella didn’t expect.

Courage.

Isabella laughed quietly.

“You really believe you’re the hero.”

“No,” Emma replied.

“I believe Ethan needs someone.”

That answer seemed to irritate Isabella more than anything else.

She turned away.

“Ethan’s mother thought she could save everyone too.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

“What did you say?”

Isabella stopped.

Slowly, she looked back.

For a second, there was something strange in her expression.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Something closer to resentment.

“Victoria Sterling was not the woman everyone believed she was.”

“Don’t talk about her like that.”

“You didn’t know her.”

“I knew enough.”

“No,” Isabella said.

“You knew the version she wanted people to see.”

Emma stepped forward.

“And you expect me to believe you?”

Isabella smiled.

“I don’t need you to believe me.”

She looked toward Ethan.

“Because soon William will know the truth.”

Ethan’s face became pale.

“No…”

Emma noticed.

“What truth?”

Neither of them answered.

The silence itself was an answer.

Emma looked at Ethan.

“What truth?”

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

“She found the letters.”

Emma frowned.

“What letters?”

“My mom’s letters.”

A cold sensation moved through Emma.

“Where?”

Ethan looked toward the floor.

“Before she died, Mom said if anything happened to her, I should give them to Dad.”

Emma’s breathing slowed.

“Did you?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I tried.”

“Why didn’t you?”

His voice became barely audible.

“Because Isabella took them first.”

The room felt colder.

Emma looked back at Isabella.

“You stole letters from a child?”

Isabella’s face remained calm.

“You have no idea what was inside them.”

“Then why hide them?”

No answer.

Emma took one step forward.

“What did Victoria write?”

For the first time…

Isabella looked afraid.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Emma saw it.

Whatever those letters contained…

they could destroy her.

Suddenly, a loud noise echoed from above.

The mansion.

The ballroom.

Someone had noticed something.

Voices became louder.

A door slammed.

Then another sound.

A man’s voice.

“Isabella?”

William.

Emma and Isabella both froze.

William Sterling was calling her.

The billionaire was searching.

And he was getting closer.

Isabella looked toward the exit.

Then back at Emma.

Her expression changed completely.

The elegant wife disappeared.

The true Isabella appeared.

“If you leave this room with Ethan…”

She stepped closer.

“You won’t just destroy me.”

A pause.

“You’ll destroy William too.”

Emma stared at her.

“You expect me to care?”

Isabella whispered:

“You should.”

“Because your precious billionaire doesn’t know the truth about what happened to Victoria.”

The footsteps above grew louder.

William was almost there.

Emma looked at Ethan.

Then at the hidden doorway.

Then back at Isabella.

She had spent years believing the Sterling mansion was a place of wealth.

Power.

Security.

But now she understood.

The mansion wasn’t protecting secrets.

It was built around them.

And somewhere inside those secrets was the answer to one question:

What really happened to Victoria Sterling?

The door at the end of the passage suddenly opened.

A beam of light entered the room.

“Isabella?”

William’s voice echoed.

“Where are you?”

Isabella smiled.

But this time, there was no warmth.

Only warning.

“Choose carefully, Emma.”

“Because once William learns what happened tonight…”

She looked at Ethan.

“Nothing in this family will ever be the same.”

Emma held Ethan’s hand tighter.

And for the first time in her life…

she realized she wasn’t just fighting to save a child.

She was fighting to uncover a murder hidden behind billions of dollars, a perfect marriage, and a mansion built on lies.
