Chapter 4: The Letter Victoria Never Wanted Anyone to Find

Chapter 4: The Letter Victoria Never Wanted Anyone to Find
The room fell silent.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind of silence that comes right before a storm breaks.
William Sterling stood frozen in the middle of the hidden basement room, staring at the old envelope in his son’s hands.
An envelope written by the woman he had loved.
The woman he had buried.
The woman everyone told him was gone forever.
Victoria Sterling.
For two years, William had forced himself to accept the story.
A rainy night.
A dangerous road.
A tragic accident.
That was what the police report said.
That was what the newspapers printed.
That was what everyone around him repeated until the pain became easier to carry.
But now, standing in a secret room beneath his own mansion, holding the pieces of a truth someone had tried to bury…
William felt something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in years.
Doubt.
“Give me the letter, Ethan.”
His voice was gentle.
Not the commanding voice of a billionaire.
The voice of a father asking his frightened child for help.
Ethan looked at Emma first.
Emma nodded slowly.
“You can trust him.”
The boy hesitated.
Then he stepped forward.
He placed the envelope into his father’s hand.
William stared at it.
His fingers trembled.
He knew Victoria’s handwriting.
He had seen thousands of notes from her.
Shopping lists.
Birthday cards.
Little messages she left beside his coffee every morning.
But this was different.
The paper looked old.
Worn.
Like someone had hidden it for a long time.
William carefully opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Only a few sentences.
But the moment he read the first line…
his entire expression changed.
William, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong.
His breathing stopped.
Emma watched his eyes move across the page.
The color slowly disappeared from his face.
“What does it say?”
William didn’t answer.
He continued reading.
I don’t know who I can trust anymore.
Someone inside our home has been lying to me.
Someone close enough to know everything about our family.
William lowered the letter slightly.
His eyes moved toward Isabella.
She remained silent.
But Emma noticed something.
The woman who always had an answer suddenly had none.
William continued.
Please protect Ethan. He is too young to understand what is happening.
If anything happens to me, do not believe the first story you hear.
The truth is hidden where nobody thinks to look.
At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.
A sentence that made William’s hands shake.
The person who destroyed our family has been standing beside you all along.
William slowly lowered the letter.
Nobody spoke.
The accusation was clear.
But the identity was missing.
And that made it even worse.
Because now everyone in the room became a suspect.
Emma looked at Isabella.
Isabella looked back.
For a moment, neither woman moved.
Then Isabella laughed softly.
A strange, almost disappointed laugh.
“So that’s it?”
William stared at her.
“What?”
“You found an old letter and suddenly I’m the villain?”
Her voice was calm again.
Too calm.
“You don’t even know what Victoria was like at the end.”
William’s jaw tightened.
“Explain.”
Isabella stepped closer.
“Victoria was paranoid.”
Emma immediately noticed William’s reaction.
He hated hearing that.
Because a part of him wondered if it was true.
And Isabella knew it.
“She believed everyone was against her,” Isabella continued.
“She accused employees. Friends. Business partners.”
She looked at Emma.
“Even people who cared about her.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“You expect us to believe she imagined everything?”
“I expect you to consider the possibility.”
Isabella looked at William.
“Because you knew she was struggling.”
William looked away.
A painful silence followed.
Emma noticed.
There was something there.
Something William had never told anyone.
“You knew?”
William didn’t answer.
Emma looked at him.
“Mr. Sterling…”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“When Victoria died…”
His voice became quiet.
“She had been under a lot of pressure.”
Isabella nodded.
“Exactly.”
But Emma noticed something.
Isabella was too eager.
Too prepared.
Like she had been waiting years to use this explanation.
“What kind of pressure?” Emma asked.
William looked at her.
Then at Ethan.
“There were problems with the company.”
“Financial problems?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
William hesitated.
“Threats.”
The room became silent again.
Emma felt a chill.
“Threats?”
William nodded slowly.
“Someone was trying to force me to sell part of my company.”
“Who?”
“I never found out.”
Isabella interrupted.
“Because Victoria made things worse.”
William turned toward her.
“What does that mean?”
“She started investigating.”
Emma frowned.
“Investigating what?”
Isabella looked at William.
“Your enemies.”
William’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying Victoria wasn’t killed because someone hated her.”
A pause.
“She was killed because she discovered something.”
The words hit harder than Emma expected.
Killed.
Not died.
Killed.
William stared at Isabella.
“You’re saying my wife was murdered?”
Isabella looked directly at him.
“I’m saying you should ask yourself why someone wanted her silent.”
Emma studied Isabella carefully.
Something didn’t add up.
The woman was accusing someone else.
But why?
Why reveal this now?
Why bring up Victoria’s death when it could damage her own position?
Unless…
Unless she wasn’t afraid of the truth.
Unless she was afraid of a different truth.
Emma looked around the room.
Then she noticed something.
A small mark carved into the stone wall.
A symbol.
She stepped closer.
“What is that?”
Everyone looked at her.
Emma touched the mark.
It was a circle with a line through the center.
William’s face changed.
“Where did you see that?”
Emma turned.
“You recognize it?”
William walked closer.
Slowly.
“That symbol…”
He looked disturbed.
“Victoria drew it.”
Ethan spoke quietly.
“She drew it everywhere before she died.”
Emma looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because Isabella said it was proof my mom was sick.”
Nobody spoke.
William looked at Isabella.
“Is that true?”
Isabella remained silent.
And that silence was enough.
William’s expression became colder.
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“You protected yourself.”
For the first time, Isabella’s confidence disappeared.
But only for a moment.
Then her phone rang.
The sound echoed through the basement.
Everyone looked at it.
Isabella glanced at the screen.
And suddenly…
her face changed.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
She answered.
“Hello?”
She listened.
Then her eyes moved toward William.
“Are you sure?”
A pause.
Then:
“Send me everything.”
She ended the call.
William stared at her.
“Who was that?”
Isabella looked at him.
“The person who can prove Victoria wasn’t innocent.”
Emma felt her stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?”
Isabella smiled slightly.
“It means you’re looking in the wrong direction.”
She stepped toward the doorway.
“Because the biggest secret in this family…”
She looked at Ethan.
“Was never what happened to Victoria.”
A pause.
“It was what Victoria was hiding.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving behind three people standing in a basement full of secrets.
William holding a letter from his dead wife.
Ethan holding onto the only person who believed him.
And Emma realizing one terrifying truth:
Victoria Sterling’s death wasn’t the mystery.
May you like
It was only the beginning.
