Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Never a Stranger

Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Never a Stranger
The library door remained open behind them.
But nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the photograph in William Sterling’s hand had changed everything.
For years, he believed Isabella had entered his life after Victoria’s death.
A grieving widower.
A chance meeting.
A woman who brought warmth back into a house that had become cold.
That was the story he had told himself.
That was the story everyone believed.
But the photograph destroyed it.
Isabella had known Victoria.
Long before the wedding.
Long before the engagement.
Long before William ever introduced her as his future wife.
Emma watched the billionaire stare at the picture as if it had become something dangerous.
“William…”
He didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on Isabella’s face.
Young.
Confident.
Standing beside Victoria like they were old friends.
Not enemies.
Not strangers.
Friends.
“How is this possible?” he whispered.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Dad?”
William quickly turned the photograph over.
As if hiding it from his own son could somehow protect him.
But Ethan had already seen enough.
“Who is she?”
The question was innocent.
But it carried so much pain.
Emma knelt beside him.
“She’s someone your father needs to understand.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Is she bad?”
Nobody answered.
And that silence told the child more than words could.
William placed the photograph on the desk.
Then he picked up the document from the box.
His hands were shaking.
The title stared back at him.
THE STERLING FAMILY FILE
“What is this?” Emma asked.
William opened it.
Inside were pages of notes.
Dates.
Names.
Financial records.
Private conversations.
Victoria had documented everything.
Emma leaned closer.
The first page contained a handwritten message.
“William, if you found this, then I failed to protect you.”
William stopped reading.
His face changed.
Emma could see the pain.
Victoria had written these words knowing she might never be able to say them herself.
He continued.
“I discovered that Isabella Moretti was not who she claimed to be.”
William froze.
“Moretti?”
Emma looked at him.
“Is that her real name?”
He didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
The woman he married had entered his life under a different identity.
The next sentence was worse.
“She did not meet me by accident.”
William slowly lowered the paper.
“No…”
Emma looked at him.
“What?”
He looked lost.
“She told me she found my foundation because she admired Victoria’s charity work.”
A pause.
“She told me she didn’t know anything about my family.”
Emma looked at the photograph.
“But she did.”
William turned the page.
The next section contained a list.
People.
Organizations.
Companies.
And one name appeared repeatedly.
Alexander Sterling.
William’s brother.
Emma felt the pieces falling into place.
“Your brother and Isabella knew each other.”
William’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t know.”
“Your wife did.”
He kept reading.
Then suddenly…
he stopped.
His expression changed from confusion to horror.
“What?”
Emma stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
William didn’t answer immediately.
Then he handed her the page.
Emma read the words.
“Alexander believes William’s company should have belonged to him.”
“Isabella was brought into the family to gain access.”
“The marriage was never about love.”
Emma looked up.
Her heart was racing.
Isabella hadn’t married William because she loved him.
She had entered his life because of something bigger.
Money.
Power.
Control.
But then Emma noticed another sentence.
One written in red ink.
“The accident was not an accident.”
The room went silent.
Ethan covered his mouth.
William looked like the world had collapsed beneath him.
“My God…”
Emma stared at the page.
Victoria knew.
She knew someone had planned her death.
And she had spent her final days trying to expose them.
A sudden sound came from the hallway.
A floorboard creaked.
Everyone froze.
William immediately closed the document.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
He walked toward the door.
“Show yourself.”
The silence continued.
Then a voice spoke.
“Looking for answers, William?”
Everyone turned.
Standing at the entrance…
was Isabella.
But she wasn’t alone.
Behind her stood a man Emma had never seen before.
Older.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
A person who looked completely comfortable inside the Sterling mansion.
William’s face changed.
“Alexander.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
The missing piece had arrived.
William’s brother stepped into the library.
“Hello, little brother.”
The casual way he said it made the room colder.
William stepped forward.
“You knew.”
Alexander smiled.
“Knew what?”
“You knew about Victoria.”
A pause.
Then Alexander looked at Isabella.
And smiled.
Emma noticed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
They were working together.
William saw it too.
“You.”
His voice was filled with betrayal.
“You both lied to me.”
Isabella crossed her arms.
“You’re finally understanding.”
Ethan moved behind Emma.
She placed a protective hand on his shoulder.
Alexander looked around the library.
“Victoria always was too curious.”
William’s face darkened.
“Don’t say her name.”
Alexander ignored him.
“She thought she could expose things she didn’t understand.”
“What did you do to her?”
The question came out like a threat.
But Alexander only smiled.
“I didn’t do anything.”
Emma noticed something.
The same phrase Isabella used.
The same careful wording.
Not admitting.
Not denying.
Just avoiding.
William stepped closer.
“You killed my wife.”
Alexander laughed quietly.
“No.”
Then he looked at Isabella.
“But someone did.”
Everyone froze.
William stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
Alexander walked slowly toward the desk.
“I’m saying Victoria’s biggest mistake wasn’t discovering the truth.”
He touched the photograph.
“Her biggest mistake was trusting the wrong person.”
Emma looked at Isabella.
Isabella remained expressionless.
But something in her eyes changed.
Fear.
Just for a second.
Alexander continued.
“She thought Isabella was helping her.”
William looked at Isabella.
“What?”
Emma’s mind raced.
Helping her?
Then why was Ethan locked away?
Why hide the letters?
Why everything?
Alexander smiled.
“Your wife discovered Isabella’s real identity.”
A pause.
“She also discovered what happened before Isabella entered this family.”
William stared.
“What happened?”
Alexander looked at Emma.
Then at Ethan.
Then back at William.
“The truth about Victoria’s death…”
He leaned closer.
“Is that Isabella wasn’t the person trying to destroy your family.”
A long silence.
“She was the person Victoria hired to save it.”
Nobody moved.
Emma felt like the entire story had just turned upside down.
Isabella looked at William.
And for the first time…
she looked genuinely hurt.
Because the truth was not what anyone expected.
William whispered:
“Then why did you lock my son away?”
Isabella looked at Ethan.
Her expression changed.
And when she spoke…
her voice was no longer cold.
It was broken.
“Because I was trying to keep him alive.”
The words shocked everyone.
Emma stared at her.
“What?”
Isabella took a breath.
“Because the person who wanted Ethan gone…”
She looked toward Alexander.
“…is standing right in front of you.”
The library became silent.
And Alexander’s smile disappeared.
For the first time that night…
May you like
someone looked afraid.
