Chapter 5: The Secret Victoria Took to Her Grave

Chapter 5: The Secret Victoria Took to Her Grave
The hidden basement felt colder after Isabella left.
Not because the temperature changed.
Because the truth had.
Five minutes ago, Emma believed she had uncovered a simple nightmare.
A cruel stepmother.
A missing child.
A terrible secret hidden inside a wealthy family.
But now she understood something much bigger was happening.
The basement wasn’t just a place where Ethan had been hidden.
It was a place where someone had buried the truth.
William Sterling remained silent, staring at the doorway where his wife had disappeared.
The letter from Victoria was still in his hand.
His fingers gripped the paper so tightly Emma worried he might tear it.
“Mr. Sterling…”
He didn’t respond.
“William.”
The billionaire finally looked at her.
And Emma saw something she had never seen before.
Not power.
Not confidence.
Pain.
“I spent two years believing I failed her.”
His voice was quiet.
“I thought if I had been home more… if I had noticed the signs… maybe I could have saved her.”
Emma didn’t know what to say.
Because sometimes grief was heavier than any words.
But Ethan did.
The boy slowly stepped toward his father.
“Dad…”
William looked at him.
And the moment he saw his son’s face, something inside him broke.
He dropped to his knees.
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan froze.
William Sterling was a man who controlled companies, negotiated billion-dollar deals, and made powerful people wait for his approval.
But now he was kneeling in front of his nine-year-old son.
“I’m so sorry, Ethan.”
The boy’s eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to tell you.”
William closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“No…”
Ethan shook his head.
“You didn’t know.”
The words hurt because they were true.
“You believed her.”
William looked down.
“I did.”
Emma watched the father and son standing in the middle of a room built from secrets.
For years, Ethan had been surrounded by wealth.
But all he wanted was someone to believe him.
William slowly stood.
“We need to get out of here.”
Emma nodded.
“Yes.”
But before they moved, Ethan suddenly grabbed her sleeve.
“Wait.”
Emma looked down.
“What is it?”
The boy looked at the wall.
At the drawings.
“There’s something else.”
He walked toward the corner.
Emma followed.
“What?”
Ethan pointed at one of the drawings.
A picture of the mansion.
But unlike the others, this one had a red circle around a specific room.
The old library.
Emma frowned.
“The library?”
Ethan nodded.
“My mom told me never to go there.”
William looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because she said someone was watching.”
The words made Emma stop.
Someone was watching.
The same feeling she had when she saw the cameras in the hidden passage.
This wasn’t only about Isabella.
Someone else was involved.
William looked at the drawing.
“When did Victoria say this?”
“Two weeks before she died.”
A long silence followed.
Emma looked at William.
“Did your wife ever mention anyone else?”
William shook his head.
“Not directly.”
“Think.”
He closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then his expression changed.
“There was someone.”
Emma waited.
“Who?”
William looked uncomfortable.
“An old family employee.”
“Name?”
“Marcus Hale.”
The name meant nothing to Emma.
“Who is he?”
William looked toward the dark passage.
“He worked for my father before me.”
“Security?”
“No.”
William hesitated.
“He managed private affairs.”
Emma understood immediately.
Someone who knew everything.
Family secrets.
Money.
Relationships.
Weaknesses.
A person like that could be dangerous.
“What happened to him?”
William’s face became serious.
“He disappeared shortly after Victoria died.”
Emma frowned.
“Disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“Didn’t you look for him?”
William looked away.
“I thought he left because he felt guilty.”
“Guilty about what?”
William didn’t answer.
And that told Emma everything.
There was another secret.
A bigger one.
Suddenly, a noise came from above.
A loud crash.
Then voices.
William immediately became alert.
“What was that?”
Emma looked toward the hidden doorway.
“I don’t know.”
Another sound.
Footsteps.
Multiple people.
William moved in front of Ethan.
Protective.
For the first time, Emma saw the billionaire not as a powerful businessman…
but as a father terrified of losing his child again.
“Stay behind me.”
They waited.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“Mr. Sterling?”
William recognized it.
His face changed.
“Security.”
Emma relaxed slightly.
But only slightly.
Because something felt wrong.
William opened the door carefully.
Two security guards stood outside.
“Sir, we heard shouting.”
William looked at them.
“Who sent you?”
The guards exchanged a glance.
That tiny hesitation caught Emma’s attention.
One of them answered:
“Mrs. Sterling.”
William’s expression darkened.
“Of course.”
The guard looked confused.
“Sir?”
William stepped forward.
“Where is my wife?”
The guard hesitated.
“She asked us to secure the house.”
“Secure it from what?”
No answer.
Emma noticed one guard’s hand moving toward his jacket.
Something metallic flashed.
A weapon?
Her instincts screamed.
“William!”
She grabbed his arm.
A second later, the guard pulled out a small device.
Not a gun.
A phone.
He pressed a button.
The lights inside the basement suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Ethan cried out.
Emma reached for him.
“Ethan!”
Someone moved in the darkness.
Fast.
Too fast.
A hand grabbed Ethan.
Emma reacted instantly.
She grabbed the attacker’s wrist.
“Let him go!”
A struggle followed.
The room was chaos.
William shouted.
“Get away from my son!”
Then the emergency lights turned on.
Everyone froze.
The guard was gone.
But Ethan was still there.
Because Emma had never let go.
She was still holding his hand.
The second guard had disappeared too.
William looked toward the empty doorway.
“They weren’t security.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
Her heart pounded.
“They were sent here.”
“By Isabella?”
Emma didn’t answer.
Because she wasn’t sure anymore.
Then Ethan pointed toward the floor.
“Emma…”
She looked down.
A small piece of paper had fallen during the struggle.
Emma picked it up.
There was only one sentence written on it.
But it made William’s face turn pale.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
It was Victoria’s.
The message said:
“William, if they find Ethan, it means they already know the truth.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then, underneath the sentence, there was another line.
A line written differently.
A line added later.
“And Emma Torres is the only person who can uncover what I left behind.”
Emma stared at the paper.
Her name.
Victoria had written her name.
Before she died.
A woman she had never met personally.
A woman who somehow knew Emma would be the one to find the secret.
William looked at her.
“Emma…”
His voice was filled with confusion.
“How did my wife know you?”
Emma slowly shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
But deep inside…
she knew one thing.
This was no longer a mystery she had accidentally discovered.
Victoria had chosen her.
And somewhere inside Sterling Manor…
there was something Victoria had trusted Emma to find.
May you like
Something powerful enough that someone was willing to destroy an entire family to keep hidden.
