Chapter 12 - A Voice From the Dead.

Nobody moved.

The voice came again from the other side of the cottage door.

"Mara, sweetheart, open the door."

Elena felt every hair on her arms rise.

It was their mother's voice exactly.

The warm rasp.

The slight pause before Mara's name.

Even the word sweetheart sounded right.

Mara closed her eyes for one second.

"Recording."

Gabriel looked toward the windows.

"Or voice synthesis."

Elena stared at the door.

"Why would someone do that?"

"To make us emotional," Mara said.

"It's working."

Celeste moved to the side wall and checked through a narrow curtain gap.

"One vehicle. No headlights."

Bell lowered himself behind the kitchen counter.

"Hale used recordings before."

Elena looked at him.

"Of dead people?"

"Of family."

Mara's jaw tightened.

The voice outside changed.

"Elena, I know you're in there too."

Elena stopped breathing.

Then the recording played a sentence their mother used to say whenever the sisters argued.

"You two are stronger together than apart."

Mara's eyes filled.

Elena hated whoever stood outside for knowing exactly where to cut.

Gabriel whispered.

"Back exit?"

Celeste nodded toward a pantry door.

"Leads to the woods."

Mara shook her head.

"That's what they want."

"How do you know?"

"Because the front is theater."

She pointed toward the dark rear window.

"The real team will be behind us."

A faint red dot appeared on the pantry wall.

Then another.

Laser range finders.

Gabriel immediately pulled everyone below the window line.

"She's right."

The voice outside continued calmly.

"You don't need to be afraid."

Elena whispered.

"That's a terrible choice of words."

Mara crawled toward the utility cabinet.

She opened it and pulled down a mechanical lever.

An old irrigation pump roared to life outside.

Sprinklers erupted across the cottage yard.

The red dots vanished from the window.

"Move," Mara said.

They exited through a trap panel beneath the pantry shelving.

Elena almost laughed at the absurdity.

Apparently every building on the estate contained at least one secret exit.

The crawlspace opened into a drainage culvert fifty yards away.

They emerged beneath thick trees.

Behind them, lights flashed around the cottage.

Gabriel checked his phone.

No signal.

"Jammer."

Celeste pointed downhill.

"The old stable has a landline."

They moved quickly through the woods.

Bell struggled.

Elena took his other arm despite how angry she still was with him.

"You don't get to collapse before you finish telling me everything."

Bell gave a breathless laugh.

"You sound like Mara."

"Don't make that a compliment."

At the stable, Celeste locked the doors while Gabriel tried the landline.

Dead.

Mara opened an emergency cabinet and found an analog radio.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice broke through.

"Mr. Reyes?"

Gabriel recognized his head gardener, Luis.

"Where are you?"

"South greenhouse."

"Stay there. Call county police from your personal phone."

"Already did."

"Good."

There was a pause.

"Sir, there's something else."

"What?"

"Mr. Hale left the property twenty minutes ago."

Gabriel looked at Mara.

"Then who is outside the cottage?"

Luis answered through static.

"Security contractors. Three vehicles."

"Whose company?"

"The badges say Reyes Executive Protection."

Gabriel went still.

He owned Reyes Executive Protection.

At least on paper.

"I never sent them."

"I figured."

The radio crackled.

Then Luis said something worse.

"They have a warrant."

Elena frowned.

"For what?"

Luis read from the copy someone had shown him.

Search and detention authority tied to suspected theft of corporate records.

The named suspect was Elena Torres.

Gabriel's face turned cold.

"That's not a real warrant."

Mara looked at him.

"You sure?"

"Private contractors can't execute warrants."

"They can accompany investigators."

Celeste checked the stable window.

Blue lights appeared between the trees.

Two county sheriff vehicles were approaching the estate.

Elena exhaled.

"Good."

Mara did not look relieved.

"Maybe."

The sheriff's vehicles stopped near the stable.

A deputy called out.

"Elena Torres, come outside with your hands visible."

Gabriel stepped toward the door.

"No."

Elena caught his sleeve.

"Don't make this worse."

"Someone just weaponized my company's lawyers, security team, and apparently law enforcement against you."

"Then we need to know what they think I did."

Mara shook her head.

"If you go out there, Hale controls the story."

Elena looked at her.

"And if I run, he controls it even more."

She opened the stable door before anyone could stop her.

Bright headlights washed over her.

Two deputies stood with their hands near their belts.

Behind them was a county investigator Elena recognized from the sealed deposition case.

Detective Aaron Pike.

He had refused to return her calls for three months.

Now he held up an evidence bag.

Inside was a diamond necklace.

Gabriel recognized it immediately.

"That belonged to my mother."

Pike looked at Elena.

"It was found in Ms. Torres's apartment an hour ago."

Elena stared at him.

"My apartment was searched."

"We had a warrant."

"Someone planted that."

Pike's expression was tired rather than hostile.

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"That's why I'm not arresting you yet."

Mara stepped into the light behind Elena.

Pike saw her.

Every trace of calm vanished from his face.

"Mara Torres?"

Mara froze.

Pike slowly lowered the evidence bag.

"You're supposed to be dead."

Mara's voice was flat.

"You were supposed to protect me."

Gabriel looked from one to the other.

"You know him."

Mara nodded.

"He's the federal contact I told you was compromised."

Pike raised both hands.

"Mara, listen to me."

"No."

"Hale knows about the backup."

Mara's face changed.

"What backup?"

May you like

Pike looked at the wooden broom still in Elena's hand.

"That one."
