Chapter 7 - The False Alarm.

The alarm lasted eleven seconds.

Then it stopped as abruptly as it had started.

Emergency lights came on along the floor, painting the library in low red strips.

Gabriel reached for Elena's hand and stopped himself before touching her.

"Stay beside me."

This time she did not argue.

Celeste checked her tablet.

"The system says the north gate breach was false."

"A false breach and a power interruption at the exact moment Hale gets cornered," Gabriel said.

Hale sighed.

"You are becoming dramatic."

"And you're becoming boring."

Gabriel pointed at the chair near the fireplace.

"Sit."

Hale stared at him.

"I'm your attorney, not your employee."

"Tonight you're a man holding a document dated after a woman disappeared."

Hale sat.

Elena did not take her eyes off him.

"Who wrote it?"

"Mara."

"Then prove it."

"The signature is there."

"Signatures can be copied."

Hale folded his hands.

"You came into this home under false pretenses, Ms. Torres."

"I came looking for my sister."

"You lied on your employment forms."

Elena's pulse jumped.

Gabriel turned toward her.

"What did you lie about?"

She hated the timing.

"My prior employer."

"Why?"

"Because if anyone searched my real work history, they'd know I used to be a records analyst."

Hale nodded slowly.

"There it is."

Gabriel looked at Elena.

"You aren't a professional housekeeper."

"I know how to clean."

"That's not what I asked."

"No."

She took a breath.

"I worked for a legal document contractor for five years."

Hale leaned back.

"And she accessed sealed archives there three months ago."

Elena stared at him.

"How do you know that?"

"Because one of the files belonged to Reyes Holdings."

Gabriel looked between them.

"What file?"

Elena had hoped she could avoid this part until she had proof.

That option was gone.

"A deposition from a civil case eight years ago."

"Whose deposition?"

"A former Reyes driver named Thomas Bell."

Gabriel knew the name.

"Bell worked for my father."

"He claimed he saw Mara get into a black SUV after she left the estate."

Hale's eyes hardened.

"That deposition was sealed."

"So was my sister's disappearance."

"That's not how law works."

"Funny how often law seems to work for men with private offices."

Gabriel almost smiled despite himself.

Hale did not.

"Bell later withdrew the statement."

"After receiving eighty thousand dollars from Northstar Civic Partners," Elena said.

Silence fell.

Gabriel turned sharply toward Hale.

"You knew that?"

Hale's face remained composed.

"I knew there was a settlement."

"For what?"

"A labor dispute."

"Bell was a driver."

"Drivers can have labor disputes."

Elena stepped toward him.

"He disappeared six months later."

Hale looked at her.

"People move."

"His daughter still gets a birthday card every year with no return address."

That made Hale pause.

Elena noticed.

So did Gabriel.

"You contacted Bell's daughter?" Gabriel asked.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Two months ago."

"Is that when the threats started?"

Elena nodded.

The first had been a note tucked under her apartment door.

STOP ASKING ABOUT NORTHSTAR.

The second was a stranger waiting beside her car after work.

He had not touched her.

He had only said Mara made the same mistake.

Then came the break-in.

Then the staged collision that left bruises along Elena's shoulder and cheek when her car was forced into a guardrail.

Police had called it a hit-and-run.

Elena knew better.

Gabriel's voice was dangerously quiet.

"You were in a crash?"

"Three days before I started here."

"And you still took the job."

"That was the point."

"You thought the safest place was the house connected to the threats?"

"I thought the answers were here."

"Answers don't make you bulletproof."

Elena stared at him.

"Neither does money."

That silenced him.

Celeste cleared her throat.

"The security system is back online."

Gabriel looked at her tablet.

"Find the source of the false gate signal."

"Already doing it."

"And lock Hale's credentials."

Hale stood.

"You cannot do that."

"Watch me."

"Gabriel, think carefully."

"I am."

Hale's voice lowered.

"If you treat me like an enemy, I may stop protecting you like a client."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Maybe that's overdue."

Hale looked at Elena with open dislike now.

"Your sister created chaos because she mistook fragments for truth."

Elena's hands curled.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Did you hurt her?"

"No."

"Did my father?" Gabriel asked.

Hale looked at him.

"Your father hurt many people in ways that never left a mark."

It was not an answer.

Celeste's tablet chimed.

She looked down.

Her face changed.

"The false gate breach came from inside the estate."

Gabriel turned.

"Where?"

Celeste enlarged the map.

A blinking point appeared beneath the east wing.

"There shouldn't be anything there," she said.

Elena remembered the hidden corridor.

"There is."

Gabriel looked at Hale.

The older man was no longer smiling.

"What is under this house?"

May you like

Hale's reply was almost a whisper.

"Something your father made me promise you would never see."
