Chapter 17 - The Witness Who Built the Trap.

Bell did not sit.
He looked around the room as if measuring the distance between every person and every exit.
Pike placed his hand near his radio.
"Thomas, don't make this worse."
Bell laughed softly.
"Worse for who?"
Elena felt the shift immediately.
The nervous former driver was disappearing.
Something colder was taking his place.
Gabriel kept his voice steady.
"Did you run Hale off the road?"
"No."
"Was that your van?"
"Not mine."
Mara spoke.
"You knew where it was."
"So did Celeste."
Celeste stared at him.
"You watched us park it."
Bell shrugged.
"Then perhaps someone else watched too."
Elena stepped closer to the table.
"How did Hale know your name?"
"Because he's spent eight years hunting me."
"Then why did he say you attacked him instead of pretending you were dead?"
Bell looked at her.
"Ask him."
"I plan to."
"Good."
His smile returned.
"Maybe he'll tell you another story you like better."
Mara's face tightened.
"Stop."
Bell turned toward her.
"Stop what?"
"Doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Making every fact sound uncertain until nobody trusts anyone."
The room went quiet.
Bell's smile disappeared.
Mara continued.
"That's how you kept me hidden."
Elena looked at her sister.
"What do you mean?"
Mara never took her eyes off Bell.
"Every time I wanted to contact home, Thomas had a new reason not to."
"Because Hale was watching you," Bell said.
"Maybe."
Elena almost laughed despite the tension.
Mara continued.
"Every time I tried to go to investigators, he told me someone had been compromised."
Pike frowned.
"Who told you my task force was compromised?"
Mara looked at Bell.
"He did."
Pike's expression changed.
"Not me?"
"I received an encrypted message that appeared to come from your team."
"We never sent one."
Bell shook his head.
"This is absurd."
Mara's voice remained calm.
"Is it?"
"I kept you alive."
"You kept me isolated."
Elena felt anger rising again, but now it had a target she had not expected.
"You knew our mother died."
Bell looked at her.
"Yes."
"And you told Mara."
"Yes."
"Did you ever tell her Mom wasn't being watched anymore?"
Bell did not answer.
Mara's eyes filled.
"He told me the funeral was being monitored."
Pike shook his head.
"It wasn't."
Mara looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because I attended from an unmarked vehicle."
Elena stared at Pike.
"You were there?"
"I was still trying to find Mara."
Mara closed her eyes.
Bell's voice sharpened.
"You think Pike is clean because he says he is?"
Pike looked at him.
"No."
That surprised everyone.
Pike removed his badge and placed it on the table.
"I'm not clean."
Mercer's shadow entered the room without the sheriff being present.
Pike continued.
"Eight years ago, Mercer ordered me to delay one evidence request in the Mara Torres case."
Mara's jaw tightened.
"Why?"
"He said Isabel Reyes needed forty-eight hours to move a witness."
"Did you delay it?"
"Yes."
"That could have cost me everything."
"I know."
Pike's voice was rough.
"I've been trying to fix it ever since."
Bell scoffed.
"Convenient confession."
Pike turned toward him.
"Maybe."
Elena almost smiled.
Bell did not.
Gabriel's phone rang from an unknown number.
He answered on speaker.
Marcus Hale's voice came through.
"Gabriel, listen carefully."
"I'm listening."
"Thomas Bell is not a witness."
Bell rolled his eyes.
"Of course."
Hale continued.
"He's the reason Meridian exists."
Gabriel looked at Bell.
"Proof?"
"My office has a paper file labeled Eastbridge."
"What's Eastbridge?"
"Bell's company."
Bell laughed.
"I don't own a company."
Hale's voice sharpened through the speaker.
"Not under your name."
He gave them a corporation number.
Celeste wrote it down.
"Why should we trust you?" Elena asked.
Hale paused.
"You shouldn't."
That answer surprised her.
"I helped Rafael hide Northstar."
The room went silent.
"I falsified documents."
Hale continued.
"I paid Bell to withdraw his statement."
Pike looked stunned.
"You're admitting that on a recorded line?"
"Record it."
Hale sounded exhausted.
"I'm done protecting dead men and living cowards."
Bell stepped toward the phone.
"You're framing me because your operation collapsed."
Hale laughed bitterly.
"My operation?"
"Northstar."
"Northstar made me rich."
Hale's voice became colder.
"But Meridian has been stealing from me too."
That changed everything.
Gabriel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Someone siphoned seventeen million dollars from accounts I controlled."
"And you think Bell did it."
"I know he did."
"Why didn't you go to police?"
"Because explaining the theft required explaining where the money came from."
Elena looked at Bell.
"So you stole from a thief."
Bell stared at her.
"Careful."
For the first time, the word sounded like a warning.
Mara noticed.
"There you are."
Bell turned toward her.
"What?"
"The man I kept seeing for half a second whenever I disagreed with you."
Bell's jaw tightened.
Mara continued.
"You never protected me because you cared whether I lived."
"That's a lie."
"You protected me because I knew enough to be useful and not enough to expose you."
Bell stepped forward.
Gabriel blocked him.
"Back up."
Bell looked at Gabriel with open contempt.
"You think standing in front of women makes you a good man?"
Gabriel's voice remained quiet.
"No."
He glanced at Elena.
"Listening when they tell me something is wrong is a start."
Bell's hand moved toward his jacket.
Pike reacted instantly.
"Hands where I can see them."
Bell stopped.
Then he smiled.
"You still don't understand."
A second later, every computer in the grounds office powered on by itself.
A countdown appeared across each screen.
09:59.
09:58.
09:57.
Mara went pale.
"What's that?"
May you like
Bell looked at the screens.
"The end of your evidence."
