Chapter 8 - Beneath the East Wing.

Gabriel ordered Hale to remain in the library.

Hale laughed at the idea until Gabriel locked the library doors from the outside and stationed two household guards there.

They were men Gabriel trusted because both had worked for his mother, not his father.

Elena noticed the distinction.

Every decision Gabriel made now seemed to divide the estate into two histories.

His mother's people.

His father's people.

And Marcus Hale, who somehow belonged to both.

Celeste led Gabriel and Elena to a service stairwell beneath the east wing.

"This ends at the wine cellar," she said.

"It used to," Gabriel replied.

At the bottom, they found a steel door hidden behind stacked wooden crates.

There was no handle on their side.

Celeste crouched beside a keypad recessed into the wall.

"This isn't on any current floor plan."

Elena looked at her.

"You manage the estate."

"I manage what I'm told exists."

"That sentence isn't helping your case."

Celeste met her eyes.

"I know."

Gabriel entered an old family security code.

The keypad flashed red.

Celeste tried an administrative override.

Red again.

Elena noticed a tiny groove beneath the keypad.

It was shaped like a key.

She pulled out the brass ring from the west corridor.

The key marked M fit perfectly.

Gabriel looked at her.

"Of course it does."

"You sound annoyed."

"I don't enjoy being outsmarted by furniture."

Elena turned the key.

The steel door opened.

Cold air moved through the gap.

Beyond it was a concrete corridor illuminated by dim emergency strips.

Gabriel used his phone light.

They walked downward along a shallow ramp.

At the end stood another door.

This one was already open.

Inside was a records room.

Rows of filing cabinets stretched wall to wall.

Paper files filled them.

No network.

No obvious computers.

It was the kind of archive designed to survive digital searches.

Elena moved toward the nearest cabinet.

Labels listed company names she recognized from the sealed deposition.

Northstar Civic Partners.

Silver Finch Logistics.

Crown Municipal Services.

Hale Protective Systems.

Gabriel opened a drawer.

Inside were cash ledgers, signed contracts, and photocopied IDs.

"This is a shadow operation."

Celeste looked over his shoulder.

"Your father?"

"Maybe."

Elena opened another drawer.

Inside were folders labeled with employee names.

One read TORRES, MARA.

Her hands shook as she pulled it free.

The folder contained performance reviews, copies of Mara's emails, photographs of her entering the office, and notes about people she spoke with.

At the back was a document titled RISK ASSESSMENT.

The final line made Elena's vision blur.

Subject has retained copies and should be contained before external disclosure.

"Contained," Elena whispered.

Gabriel read the sentence.

"That could mean fired, isolated, legally restrained."

"Or worse."

"I know."

Celeste opened another drawer.

"Mr. Reyes."

Her voice changed.

Gabriel walked over.

She held a file labeled GABRIEL REYES.

His own name.

Inside were reports dating back nearly fifteen years.

University friends.

Relationships.

Medical appointments.

Private arguments with his father.

Travel plans.

Every personal detail had been recorded.

Gabriel's face became unreadable.

"My father was tracking me too."

Elena touched one page.

A handwritten note from eight years earlier read:

GABRIEL SHOWS EXCESSIVE SYMPATHY TOWARD TORRES.

LIMIT CONTACT.

She looked at him.

"You knew Mara better than you told me."

He did not deny it.

"We were friends."

"Friends?"

"Yes."

"How close?"

Gabriel looked away.

That was enough.

Elena's anger returned.

"You were involved with her."

"No."

"Then why are you acting like that?"

"Because she asked me to leave with her that night."

Elena stared at him.

"Leave where?"

"Anywhere."

"And you said no."

"My father was collapsing in the next room."

"So you chose him."

"I chose the emergency in front of me."

"And Mara disappeared."

Gabriel's voice tightened.

"I know what happened after."

The pain in his face stopped Elena from saying the next cruel thing that came to mind.

Celeste moved deeper into the archive.

"There's another file here."

She pulled a thin folder from a locked drawer that had been left partly open.

The label read INCIDENT 10/14.

Gabriel opened it.

Inside was a printed security log.

At 11:42 p.m., Mara's badge exited the front gate.

At 11:48 p.m., a black Hale Protective Systems SUV entered through the service gate.

At 11:55 p.m., the same vehicle exited.

The passenger field contained one handwritten word.

TORRES.

Elena's breath caught.

"They took her."

Gabriel turned to Celeste.

"Get Hale down here."

Celeste did not move.

"I can't."

"Why?"

Her tablet chimed again.

The library door sensor showed open.

Both guards' radios were offline.

Marcus Hale was gone.

Then a sound came from the far end of the underground archive.

A filing cabinet slammed shut.

May you like

Elena turned.

Someone else was down there with them.
