Chapter 1: The Broken Vase

Chapter 1: The Broken Vase
The sound of shattered porcelain echoed through the ancestral mansion like a gunshot.
For three hundred years, the Valmont family estate had stood untouched, a symbol of wealth, power, and arrogance.
The priceless Ming dynasty vase that had belonged to generations of Valmont heirs now lay in hundreds of broken pieces across the polished marble floor.
And standing above it was Mariana Vale.
Her breathing was steady.
Her eyes were not.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she was finally done pretending.
Across from her, Adrian Valmont still had his hand wrapped around her wrist.
His grip was tight enough to leave marks.
"You think you can challenge my family in my own house?" Adrian hissed.
His voice carried the confidence of a man who had never been told no.
Behind him, beneath the enormous crystal chandelier, stood his mother.
Vivienne Valmont.
A woman who had spent years perfecting the art of destroying people without raising her voice.
She looked at Mariana with a cold smile.
"Adrian," Vivienne said softly, "she needs to remember who she is."
Mariana slowly looked down at Adrian's hand.
Then she looked back into his eyes.
"Remove your hand."
Adrian laughed.
Actually laughed.
"You still don't understand, do you?"
He stepped closer.
"This is my family's home."
"No," Mariana replied.
The room became silent.
Even Vivienne's smile faded slightly.
Mariana pulled her wrist free.
Not violently.
Not desperately.
Just enough to show him that she could.
"This was never your home."
Adrian stared at her.
"What did you say?"
Mariana adjusted her sleeve, covering the faint red marks on her skin.
"I said you have been living inside a lie."
Vivienne stepped forward.
"Enough."
Her voice was sharp.
"You married into this family. You were given everything. A beautiful house. A wealthy husband. A respected name."
Mariana turned toward her.
"A name?"
She smiled.
"That's exactly what you are afraid of losing."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You are leaving."
Mariana looked at him.
"You think you're throwing me out?"
"Pack your things."
"You think this estate belongs to you?"
Adrian walked closer.
"It belongs to the Valmont family."
Mariana reached into her purse.
She removed a small black envelope.
And placed it carefully on the table.
"Interesting."
Adrian looked at the envelope.
"What is that?"
"The reason you should have treated me better."
Vivienne's face changed.
Only for a second.
But Mariana noticed.
She always noticed.
Because for the last five years, she had been watching.
Listening.
Collecting.
"You have no idea what you married," Mariana whispered.
Adrian picked up the envelope.
Inside was a single document.
His face slowly lost color.
"No..."
Vivienne stepped forward.
"What is it?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
Mariana walked toward the front doors.
"You spent five years believing I was just a quiet wife who didn't understand your family's power."
She stopped.
"You forgot one thing."
She turned around.
"I built half of it."
The doors opened.
Cold night air entered the mansion.
And as Mariana walked away, Adrian finally understood something terrifying.
