Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Betrayal

Adrian didn't sleep.

Not because he was angry.

Because he was remembering.

Every moment he had ignored Mariana.

Every time his mother insulted her.

Every time he allowed his family to make her feel small.

And now he understood something terrifying.

She never fought back.

Because she didn't need to.

She already had the power.

The next morning, Adrian confronted Vivienne.

"You knew my father trusted Mariana."

Vivienne continued drinking her coffee.

"Careful, Adrian."

"Did you know?"

Her silence answered him.

His expression hardened.

"You lied to me."

Vivienne placed the cup down.

"I protected you."

"From what?"

"From losing everything."

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Everything was already lost."

Vivienne stood.

"You have no idea what Mariana is capable of."

"No."

Adrian stepped closer.

"I don't think you understand what she is capable of."

For the first time, Vivienne looked uncertain.

And Adrian noticed.

That scared him more than anything.

Later that day, Mariana arrived at the Valmont estate.

Not as a wife.

Not as a guest.

As the rightful owner of the trust.

The entire staff gathered in the entrance hall.

Some looked nervous.

Others looked relieved.

Mariana looked around.

This place had once made her feel powerless.

Now every corner belonged to her.

Adrian appeared at the top of the stairs.

Their eyes met.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally, Adrian walked down.

"I read the letter."

Mariana nodded.

"I expected you would."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Her expression remained calm.

"Tell you what?"

"Who you really were."

Mariana looked at him.

"I wanted to know who you were without knowing."

That answer hurt.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

"If I had known you owned everything..."

"You would have treated me differently."

Adrian looked away.

Because he couldn't deny it.

Mariana stepped closer.

"That was the point."

A long silence.

Then Adrian whispered:

"Did you ever love me?"

The question surprised her.

For a moment, the powerful businesswoman disappeared.

And the woman who had once believed in him returned.

"I did."

Adrian looked at her.

"But you loved your pride more."

Her words cut deeper than anger.

Before he could respond, Mariana's phone rang.

She answered.

Her assistant's voice came through.

"Mariana, we found the missing records."

Her expression changed.

"What records?"

"The ones connected to Victor Valmont's death."

Adrian heard it.

His face turned pale.

"What did she say?"

Mariana looked at him.

May you like

"Your father's death wasn't an accident."

The entire mansion went silent.
