Chapter 5 - The First Blood. The lead mercenary stepped into the living room, his night-vision goggles scanning the empty couches.

I was perched above them on the interior balcony, blending perfectly into the shadows of the vaulted ceiling.

I didn't wait for them to spread out and establish a tactical advantage in my home.

I dropped from the balcony, landing silently behind the trailing gunman, and slammed the butt of my pistol into his temple.

He crumpled instantly, his heavy body hitting the hardwood floor with a dull, lifeless thud.

The other two spun around, their suppressed rifles spitting a flurry of quiet, lethal bullets that tore through the drywall where I had just been standing.

I dove behind a marble kitchen island, glass shattering around me as their rounds decimated my wine collection.

“She’s in the kitchen! Flank her!” the leader barked in a thick, unrecognizable accent.

I took a deep breath, checked my magazine, and calculated their approach based on the scuffing of their boots.

As the second gunman rounded the corner, I swept his legs out from under him with a brutal kick to his knee.

Before he could pull his trigger, I disarmed him and drove my elbow into his sternum, knocking the wind out of his lungs.

Two down, one to go.

The leader, realizing his team was being dismantled, frantically sprayed bullets toward the kitchen island in a desperate bid for cover.

I waited for the unmistakable metallic click of his weapon locking empty.

In that split second, I vaulted over the counter, closing the distance between us before he could slam a fresh magazine into his rifle.

I grabbed him by the tactical vest, slammed him into the wall, and pressed the burning hot barrel of my pistol directly under his chin.

“Who sent you?” I demanded, my voice a deadly, vibrating whisper in the ruined apartment.

He just spat blood onto the floor, offering a defiant, bloody grin.

“Your father sends his regards, little girl,” the mercenary choked out.

I didn't hesitate; I struck him across the jaw, knocking him unconscious, and immediately began zip-tying his wrists.

Sirens wailed in the distance, slowly growing louder as the city police responded to the silent alarm I had tripped twenty minutes prior.

Arthur had played his hand, assuming violence would silence the impending storm.

But as I looked at the three bound assassins on my floor, I realized this was the exact piece of leverage I needed for the courtroom.

My father wanted a war of attrition, but he was about to face a legal and tactical onslaught he could never comprehend.

The preliminary hearing was set for Monday morning, and I was going to walk into that courthouse with the devil’s own fury.
