Chapter 1: The Eviction

Bellissimo always smelled like fresh garlic butter, warm bread straight from the oven, and the kind of expensive danger masked as high-society elegance. Soft amber lighting reflected across polished marble floors, catching the glint of crystal glasses beneath towering chandeliers. Soft piano music drifted through the dining room, wrapping the elite crowd in an illusion of timeless luxury.

I walked in, holding the hands of my seven-year-old twins, Lucas and Mia. Lucas clutched a wooden birdhouse he had spent three weekends painting bright blue; Mia had meticulously glued tiny pink flowers to its roof. It was a heartfelt gift for their grandfather’s sixtieth birthday.

Instead of a warm welcome, my sister Diane blocked the entrance to the private dining room. Her arms were tightly crossed, her expression a mask of pure disdain as she ignored the handmade gift in Lucas's small hands.

"We didn't make extra room for your irritating kids," she said, her voice cutting sharply through the soft music.

I looked past her to my father. He stood in the shadows behind Diane, his eyes fixed firmly on the carpet.

"Kristen..." he whispered, his voice trembling with cowardly submission. "Maybe it's better if you leave. You know how she gets when things aren't arranged her way."

I didn't argue. I didn't beg. I simply looked down at my children, saw the heartbreak welling up in Lucas’s eyes as the birdhouse tilted, and turned us around. We walked out.
