I turned my phone back on twenty minutes later just to check the time, and it instantly exploded with activity. Forty-seven missed calls. Twelve voicemails. The most recent message wasn't from family. It was from an unknown, encrypted number.
Unfreeze the card, Kristen. Or they don't leave.
My blood ran cold. I tapped the first voicemail and pressed it to my ear. Diane’s voice flooded the speaker, stripped of all her usual arrogance. She was hyperventilating, choked with terror.

I stood up so fast I knocked my soda to the floor. The dark liquid pooled around my boots. This was never a family dinner dispute.
