Chapter 9: The Chase
Tires screamed as I threw the heavy SUV into reverse, the engine howling in protest. I didn't bother checking the rearview camera; instinct took over. We smashed into a heavy steel dumpster, the sickening crunch of metal clearing the makeshift barrier they had set up to box us in. I immediately slammed the gearshift into drive.
In my rearview mirror, the two men burst out of the narrow alleyway, their silhouettes illuminated by the flickering neon sign of the restaurant. They didn't hesitate, raising their heavy-caliber firearms in unison. Muzzle flashes lit up the dark like strobe lights, and an instant later, our back windshield shattered into a spiderweb of cracked safety glass. Shards rained down onto the third-row seating, dangerously close to where the kids were huddled.

"Get down! Keep your heads down and cover your ears!" I yelled over the roar of the engine and the rushing wind.
I floored the accelerator, the tires struggling for grip before catching and tearing onto the main avenue. We were a massive, speeding bullet cutting through the slick night streets. Just as I thought we had a head start, a sleek black sedan roared out of a blind side street, completely ignoring a red light. Its high beams snapped on, blinding me in the mirrors and washing the interior of our SUV in a stark, ghostly white light. They were directly on our bumper, their engine revving with predatory aggression. The birthday dinner had officially escalated into a deadly pursuit, and the night was just beginning.
